Description
Episode Description
This documentary program centers around influential jazz trumpet player, John Birks Gillespie, better known as Dizzy Gillespie. Interviews and recordings tell the story of his life as his students, musical influences, and other fellow performers join him in a live tribute concert dedicated to Dizzy at the Wolf Trap Filene Center. They, along with the narrator Willis Conover, discuss Gillespie's jazz career in the swing band era, his transition to bebop in the 1940's, his trip to Cuba leading to Latin influences in his music, and finally his career as a teacher and global jazz ambassador. Most featured tunes on the program are written by Dizzy himself, including 'A Night in Tunisia', 'Birk's Works', 'Fiesta Mojo', 'Yenga', 'Tour de Force', 'Oo bop a da', and 'Quickly Forward'. The program concludes with special performances featuring Dizzy Gillespie with Oscar Peterson and Carmen McRae, as well as a big band arrangement of 'Happy Birthday'.
