- Episode Description
- The Rev. Billy James Hargis, a 42-year-old evangelist and founder-director of the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Christian Crusade, is interviewed by host Donald Fouser. Rev. Hargis is an ordained Protestant minister in the Christian Church (Church of Christ), who resigned his pastorate to devote his full energies to exposing apostasy and communism in America. through the Christian Church. Rev. Hargis states the Crusades chief purpose as being to safeguard and protect the Christian ideals upon which American was founded; to preserve the cherished freedoms which are the heritage of every American; to stimulate Biblical Christianity in our churches and homes; to strive for sound pro-American education in the nations schools and colleges; to eradicate Marxism and collectivism from our churches, schools and national life; and to combat, militantly and aggressively, and to expose publically, any person or organization whose words or actions inculcate leftist, socialist or communist philosophies or aims, intentionally or otherwise, into any phase of American life. In their book Danger on the Right, Benjamin R. Epstein and Arnold Forster of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith describe Rev. Hargis in these terms: Of all American evangelists propagandizing for the Radical Right, Hargis is the most zealous and probably leaves the greatest impact .... A veritable Niagara of propaganda has flooded the Southwest and other parts of the country from his Tulsa building. All of it carries forth the wild Radical Right assertion that there is treason in high offices in the United States and that Communists are everywhere. With Hargis, such exaggerations are usually followed by eloquent pleas for more money to enable the Reverend Doctor to intensify his dire warnings to America of the peril it faces. Rev. Hargiss radio broadcasts are heard on some 100 stations and his organization publishes a monthly magazine and a weekly newsletter. Among Rev. Hargiss books are Communist America -- Must It Be?, The Facts about Communism and Our Churches, Communism, the Total Lie, The Real Extremists -- The Far Left, and Distortion by Design -- The Story of Americas Liberal Press. The Dissenters: Rev. Billy James Hargis was produced for National Educational Television by its Boston affiliate, WGBH-TV. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
