Sound Escapes - Morning on the Big Island
Written by Mark Bramhill
This is BirdNote.
[SOUND OF WAVES]
It’s a warm summer morning on the western shore of the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s early, the sun is rising, and the tide is coming in.
GH: It’s peaceful. The Pacific Ocean is “Peaceful Ocean,” literally. So - the beat of the ocean is something that permeates, literally every place you go on the island.
That’s Gordon Hempton, a sound recordist who’s dedicated his life to deeply listening to the natural world. He recorded this landscape you’re hearing now. He says that even far from the shore, way up in the volcanic crater of the island...
GH: When you listen very carefully, you’ll still hear the beating of the Pacific drum.
