page program formulas for elementary school students if you're thirteen to sixteen the poems nepalese come from the seven come to some of their all know how what's the right but it is in way or another big june good afternoon i'm barbara ray leonard welcoming you to our
special live coverage of the queen's visit to virginia and her historic address to a joint session of the general assembly that is now just moments away in our newly renovated state capital for her majesty queen elizabeth the second and his royal highness prince philip arrived in richmond at three this afternoon and were ways to the governor's mansion in capital square where thousands waited on the grounds hoping to catch a glimpse of royalty after attending a short reception with former governors and invited dignitaries the queen accompanied her host governor tim kaine on a walk about of the capitol grounds she's now getting a tour of the just reopened state capital and meeting with some of virginia's school children we can see that meeting going on right there during her visit she'll also pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy at virginia tech the queen is here of course to participate in a commemoration of the four hundredth anniversary of jamestown and comes fifty years after her first visit to the settlement in jamestown joining me now to discuss this special man and offer some historical perspective is dan roberts professor of history at the university of richmond and host of a moment
in time which is now broadcast on public radio world wide welcome it is to be human and lead which could be here with you this is actually quite a moment in time for virginia is that now certainly is it's been a well i guess are several several decades green has actually been here to virginia cushy comes periodically the states but there are other oils tend to like to come to their of former possessions and i and i remind americans that britain was here from the very beginning now i understand she's making this this speech to members of the general assembly but that's not something she does very often no shoes she doesn't give speeches terribly often she gives that the wonderful space that she has to give every year which is this expression of the government's position each year and she does that i mean they actually have a speech just frustrated she'll send it back or stylistic changes which is really supposed to use a post agreed with the government has to say and she doesn't often make a standup speechless indicates how important this event must be in that in the minds of
love of englishman and britain's as well as the queen herself is it unusual at all that she decided to come back for the fortieth anniversary and she was here fifty years ago for the more than three hundred fifty or maybe didn't think she become about a quarter of the batter of this is a significant event they of the founding of jamestown was of course the beginning of the first great english empire which george before lost in the end the seventeen seventies and seventeen eighties but it's also on it good marks they are the establishment of english jurisprudence political systems language customs culture religion here on the north american continent the first permanent english settlement in it and what would accommodate the largest empire the world by the uninvited by the early twentieth century when anderson is now wrapping things up with the schoolchildren that she's been meeting with very quickly tell us what is the role of the royal family today know in america we have you have two
us essential part of government you have the un you have the government which actually operates the various ministries and then you have a head of state and it's all put together the american system we have a an executive call the president and he is both devastated also have government he has a functioning role of government in england and in other constitutional monarchies you have a split a difference between the government itself of a head of state and that the feeling is the government's come and go but the people's affection and support can always be rather remain for the great institutions of the english government system by maintaining a very continuous of the royal family who has the state so you have that difference of opinion is wonderful it in many ways because people can find some difficulties with the government but can continue to offer their loyalty to them for the nation because of their affections great well as queen elizabeth gets ready to address the legislature let's now go to the house chamber for the royal welcome
it's been the point the point is
by fbi has been presented to her majesty queen elizabeth it's been the point fb elena kagan members of the general
assembly ladies and gentlemen thank you for your generous welcome to virginia and i am delighted to be here in your state capitol today designed by their great virginia and thomas jefferson answered painstakingly restored in recent years i would like to congratulate everyone involved in this most impressive project as a state and as a nation who are still coming to terms with the dead from events in virginia tech on the sixteenth of april my heart goes out to the students friends and family as wallace killed and the medium has been affected on behalf of the people of the united kingdom i extend
my deepest sympathies at this time of such grief and sorrow i visit the united states this week to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the landing of a small group of british citizens on a tiny island in what is now the james river with the benefit of hindsight we can see in that event the origins of a singular endeavor the building of a great nation founded on the eternal values of democracy and equality based on the rule of the role and the promotion of freedom but we should always be cautious of hindsight four hundred years ago it was by naomi is preordained this venture will succeed recent archaeological work as mummified our understanding of the original settlement of jamestown
about the joys of its location and the kind of people who came one remains difficult to say what it was about these ngos which caught that vital moment in the evolution of this great country it must surely have had something to do with the ingenuity the drive in the idealism of that group of adventurers who first set foot on this patch of virginia also on the will of the people to find ways to coexist when i visited fifty years ago a guy we celebrated the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary largely from the perspective of those settlers in terms of the expiration of new worlds the spread of ideas and of the english language and the sacrifices and kindness please remain great activists and
we still appreciate today and fifty as long and now in a position to reflect more candidly on the jamestown legacy human progress rarely comes without cost and there's thirty years in jamestown when three great civilizations came together for the first time western european native american and african releases train of events which continues to have a profound social impact not only in the united states but also in the united kingdom and europe over the course of my rain and certainly since i first visited games my country has become a much more diverse society just as the commonwealth of virginia and the whole
united states of america and also undergone major social change the melting pot image of her captures one of the great strengths of your country and is an inspiration to others around the world as we face a continuing social challenges ahead it is right that we continue to reassess the meaning of historical events in the changing context of the present not least in this the two hundredth anniversary in the united kingdom the act of parliament to abolish the transatlantic slave trade it lets us reassess the us should not obscure wine in during a consequence of jamestown this four hundredth anniversary marks a managed to recognize the deep friendship which exists between our two countries
friendship is a complex of concept it means being able to debate openly disagree on occasion samantha with the times and that safe in the knowledge the bonds that draws together of history understanding and warm regard are far stronger than any temporary differences of opinion the people of the united kingdom have such a relationship with the people of this great nation is one of them is curable international collaboration is anywhere anytime in history and friendship which i certainly in my lifetime i've had good cause to be thankful that is a lasting legacy of jamestown that is something worth commemorating and that is why i am pleased to be here today
ms ba power i'm
keith ft in november and then next thing i want to think about another crime within a very nice very calm it's very appropriate that you should come and speak in the oldest continuously meeting legislative body in the in north america it is very
much follow though the pattern of parliament although it was a more of a combined in the legislature in the in this in the seventeenth century so is it appropriate that she should come here to virginia and come to the trial of democracy that we have have and have on the capitol hill near a not rich and you spent some time in london what did the brits think about their queen was actually love this lady when she first she was a young girl that twice iowa just absolutely and they were they were fascinated with her but she really is a transition figure but when de um between the older style of monarchy stiff upper lip are willing to stay in london during the during the blitz in order to be able to hold their heads high and in the end in view of all the destruction that was taking place in the east end of it there was a comment about of the queen mother there and during the home we're worked a tooth so they actually loved her and she reached out and said i want to love you i
mean that was a quote that she did in her initial speech and m and they have ever since now for the rest of the time not always exactly the same level of affection because they have tended to be somewhat less determined in their in their commitment to live and to have a duty and has recorded with the many virginians that that turned out today in an all eyes really in the nation of iran we don't have i don't want welfare what was the fascination maybe that we don't have our own royal family because our a head of state is also heavily involved in politics and can not an aunt who's and public opinion of florida state can go up and down with kind of like the idea that here's here is someone who doesn't have a tax an ax to grind so to speak and we also armed americans a few scratches just below the surface even though republicans with a small r i'm very much love our form of government and would never go back to a parliamentary government and certainly would never go back to a modified monarchy
americans are anglo files we are attached by language and religion and affection and family family ties of course and tom we will all of the our attachment to anyone and as long as you don't make it too attached and to close but john that we loved visiting it visiting england and a few of us have an opportunity from a scholarly point of view to have be able to study history and english history and witches course my privilege and a teacher as well to a whole new generation of of people listed the ban roberts thanks to join me in offering their insights on those comments like this if you miss seeing her majesty today queen elizabeth and prince philip are now off to williamsburg for the night after visiting jamestown tomorrow morning the queen will return to williamsburg to visit the college of william and mary so there are still opportunities to get a glimpse of royalty on saturday he'll see more coverage of her visit to america
as she attends the kentucky derby and then meets with president bush before concluding our visit on tuesday thanks for joining us and wherever berlin we now join our regularly scheduled program in progress thank you jeff beck group

imagine that his patrol it was a very beautiful girl and they built this violin especially for her the sound is so romantic loving and warm and it is such a wonderful sound that he gets out of that historic beautiful instrument can imagine how much of it is worth right now but does when the many things we get to celebrate well with you when we bring a new review program here to public television so give us a call right now the number to call one eight hundred four seven six eight four four zero to become a member of your community idea station as in mentioning is in fact about honor you we know that he had been fascinated with music since he was a child in fact henri it really is very confused about why classical music concerts are so quiet and timid when there's so much joy in life in the music and he's made it his gall his mission to make his concerts enjoyable and you can see that with this singing they're dancing the costumes the audience participation i'm sure that this concert is more than just terrible for the people that are there it is unforgettable and i hope that you're enjoying your experience as we are so proud to be able to bring this program to
you and the comfort of your own home now i hope you're having as much fun as the audience numbers there are but if you're not i understand because they are right and fries we're doing our best to bring you a front seat programs like that we know this isn't what you normally tune into on saturday night so we hope you're enjoying the special programs like this are available because of members like you controlling your support with membership or sake the opportunity to become a member now and help the spring programs to you in the future it is one eight hundred four seven sixty eight four four zero is it has been the position is

communities stronger and that is what membership does so i hope you will join us by becoming a member tonight of your local public television station by calling one eight hundred four seven six eight four four zero and joining the members throughout central virginia as a member of your community idea stations one eight hundred four seventh decade for four zeros the number to call i have an important question for you how much is public television worth to you you determine that this is one of those memberships that you determine how much it's worth for you how much it means to you how much you can afford how much your pocketbook allows you to become a member or two make that decision and called the night and if your pocketbook allows free to venezuela think it gets then go ahead and do that if you can add flags if you can pledge of support a dollar a day that level he's played at a few dollars we appreciate your support only the members like you to keep bringing these programs do you wind hundred for seventy six ate for four zeros number to call it's a shame the
