- Tennessee Williams ' "Ten Blocks on the Camino Real," is the original one-act play on which he subsequently based his full-length play "Camino Real." Williams has called this play an allegory made up of "the continually dissolving and transforming images of a dream outside of time, in a place of no specific locality," evoking the atmosphere of such places as Tangier, New Orleans, Casablanca, or Vera Cruz. Into this setting, the Camino Real with its dusty plaza and dried-up fountain wanders a young American, Kilroy, the prizefighter with a weak heart, who encounters an extraordinary group of Williams ' characters - drawn from life, literature and half-legend - who are trapped in the Camino Real, trying to ignore the inevitable visit of the Street Cleaners: Death's uniformed emissaries. Williams says of the play "... the construction of another world, a separate existence, its people are mostly archetypes of certain basic attitudes and qualities with those mutations that would occur if they had continued along the road to this hypothetical terminal point." NET Playhouse - "Ten Blocks on the Camino Real" is a National Educational Television production. This 90-minute piece, recorded in black and white on videotape, aired as NET Playhouse episode 1 on October 7, 1966, as NET Playhouse episode 29 on April 21, 1967, and as NET Playhouse episode 158 on October 9, 1969.
