Campus demonstrations have become a rare occurrence. Now many students have become involved

in conservative political groups organizations such as the College Republicans are attracting a growing number of young people people who are deeply involved in conservative politics. Recently Karp the campus Moonie organization has attracted many students with its conservative anti-communist thrust. The collegiate Association for the research of principals is active in political work both on and off campus and is one of the organizations belonging to Reverend moons Unification Church. It is become a part of a major controversy. While the activities of the Unification Church may seem harmless in recent years there have been widespread accusations that the church is actually a cult and brainwashing techniques are used to recruit and hold on to members in this film. They are e a film maker and make peace with uses former Moonies to depict the type of subtle brainwashing allegedly used by the Moonies this is

Gary Scharf is a former Moonie and for several years was head of the Unification Church in New York. So for that reason everything that the church does whether it's a project volunteer whether it's fundraising in the street whether it's a carp rally in support of the Reagan administration's position El Salvador whatever it may be all of them are fitting together in a religio political perception of the world in the past. Moon used this religio political perception of the world to recruit to mobilize

large numbers of his followers for political and fundraising efforts. After eight years of searching throughout the world examining very closely these communist regimes and setting ideology and other things in these countries I came to the conclusion that communism and the totalitarian state apparatus that they have developed is the greatest danger facing mankind. A rather unlikely new writer on the anti-communist bandwagon is Eldridge Cleaver. Cleaver is an ex-convict and at one time was the minister of information for the Black Panther Party. He was also an avowed Marxist who spent eight years as a fugitive after an Oakland shootout in which three people were killed. Now he's a born again patriot and an outspoken anti-communist. He is also running for Congress as an independent against incumbent Democrat Ron Dellums. I consider myself to be a constitutionalist in the tradition of the founding fathers. People are looking at. Our problems through

the lens of color we're looking at it from the point of view of what's good for America and how can we improve our lives and this is where I feel that Ron Dellums really needs to step aside because he has no ideas at all on how to make America work other than tearing it down and rearranged it along socialistic lines. Although cleavers campaign is not being taken too seriously by Dellums or by other political experts he has won the support of at least one major newspaper Reverend Moon's Washington Times. In early February on the steps of Berkeley city hall. Save the flag rally took place. The event was sponsored by Carr principal speaker none other than Eldridge Cleaver. And Cleaver regularly speaks on college campuses. Last year he spoke at over 60 campuses on a nationwide tour sponsored by car Karp is an organization that was started by the followers of Reverend Moon.

And so this is a combination that provokes intense discussion. I started that organization and their activity. And while I recognize a lot of people disagree with some of their beliefs and some of their practices and so forth I consider that they're not enemies of America I don't consider them to be a great danger to America. I consider them to be friendly towards America. Plus many of their people come from countries that have fallen to communism and therefore they have a backlog of experience in the anti-communist struggle. And this is where our paths cross. Cleaver insists that although here's a speaker for carp he has no religious affiliation with the Moonies. I am not affiliated spiritually with with carp but politically. I think it is OK to work with them. I like the positions they take. I guess communism and the support of our democratic businesses.

But Cleaver did visit deprogrammer Gary Scharf the original intention as I understood it was that the Unification Church was going to utilize Eldridge Cleaver as a black leader to get as many of the black American as many black Americans as possible to become members of Unification Church. Well after about seven months I heard from cleaver and I don't know where he got my name but at any rate he asked for a meeting and we met a couple of times and he related his experiences the Unification Church and ways that were somewhat ambiguous. On the one hand he had recently made a statement that the littlest moonie is holier than Billy Graham. On the other hand he went into some detail about his perception of the social control mechanisms that he perceived to be operative in the unification facilities. I remember him comparing them to tactics that were used in prison in the last few years the activities of carbon the Moonies have gone from proselytizing on street

corners to full fledged political action and in one thousand eighty one demonstration against Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte members of car came out to demonstrate against the law. This demonstration marked a new phase of Moonie activity in the Bay Area. New neighborhoods and new allies. San Francisco's Mission District has long been the point of arrival for immigrants from Latin America and in recent years it has become a haven for exile. In 1979 when the Nicaraguan dictator on a Stasi or so Mosul was overthrown many of his sympathizers fled to the Bay Area. Among them were former National Guardsman and members of a new organization known as the ftn. The Moonies staunchly support the anti-Communist stance of this paramilitary group. Renato banya lives in San Francisco and every day he goes to this small

office in the mission to work on developing support for the FTSE. From here he sends out propaganda materials in an attempt to gain favor with the American public. Every end is a political and military organization the political power on the military side are you know with the hands so close where working so close with the military power the Reagan administration is helping the people who is fighting in the north part of the president or soup or freedom liberty and democracy that is the reason because this is in this race who is helping us. And in Central America the US is pouring millions of dollars into Iran out of Penas ftn counterpart's dollars Contras. These forces are bent on toppling the Sandinista government of Nicaragua and this year alone they received over twenty four million dollars from the Reagan administration. The FDA an army

uses the neighboring country of Honduras to train its army and to launch its attacks on the Sandinista. And the Contras may be receiving help from the Reagan administration in another way. Berkeley Congressman Ron Dellums and the National Lawyers Guild have filed a suit alleging that the Reagan administration is illegally financing the training of Nicaraguan rebels. Initially that was concerning training camps in the United States where the CIA has been involved in training XOMA sistas National Guards in funding the operations for the trainings in California Florida Texas in Virginia. And other states where these excellences go back. In August to under arrest and try to overthrow the government. That is a direct violation of the trial the attorneys for the U.S. government are arguing that the regular administration cannot be sued for violations of the Neutrality Act. Yet the government has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of

these training camps where exiled Cubans and right wing Salvadorans trained side by side waiting to fight in Nicaragua and other Central American. Acts. And there is concern on the part of activists journalists and even a congressman that the violence in Central America may be finding its way to the Bay Area Contra Costa Congressman George Miller received threats for his criticism of El Salvador for human rights violations that after a previous trip to El Salvador. I was followed to the United States by. A dangerous individual in what we believe has been involved in a number of murders because of comments I made there. At the American Embassy in San Salvador and American activists and journalists have also been the victims of violent right wing factions El Tecolote days a small bilingual newspaper published in this building in San Francisco's Mission District in recent months it is covered extensively. The

war in El Salvador and the Contras battles in Nicaragua. One Gonzales is the editor of the paper yet he too has received threats. I mean personally I've been threatened with a phone call that my life was threatened and I just had to just be real cautious of who was around the corner and I've asked some of the staff members to to be real I guess observant of people around the office or try to maintain some kind of posture where I'm not alone as much as possible. Several weeks later the newspaper's office was broken into. I came and I saw it at the office door was a little bit open and so I pushed it open. The first thing I noticed there were a typesetter was missing. People in this demonstration are mostly Nicaraguans Cubans and Salvadoran. They are showing their support for the regular administration's tough anti-communist position on El Salvador and Nicaragua.

This event as in other similar events the demonstrators have been joined by money usually by members of car and the Moonies have worked directly with folks a right wing Salvadoran organization founded by Rene Carmona runaway and his wife Lisa now live in El Salvador. Through their frequent trips to the Bay Area they provide an important link between right wing groups here and in Central America. They admit that they have worked with the moonies but they deny they are members of the Unification Church. However in November of one thousand eighty one San Francisco Chronicle reporter Gil Reza wrote a series of stories reporting that the Carmona were directly involved with the Unification Church and at least the Carmona took several Salvadoran refugees to the moony residence in San Francisco. Their Razor says the members tried to persuade them to join Unification Church. Soon after these stories appeared Reza received several death threats from El Salvador Guatemala and Honduras. The letters called for death to the Marxist

Leninist reporters of San Francisco. While the Unification Church has supported food there is no evidence that the Moonies had anything to do with these threats. Meanwhile this group of Central Americans has gathered in the home of a Nicaraguan woman who hates the Sandinistas. Her guests to passionately anti-communist and fervent supporters of Ronald Reagan think they're not ready to make a big mistake when they have to let another appeal be instead about the one that oh yes as we all know. They represent several right wing organisations in an unprecedented alliance of Cuban Salvadorans and Nicaraguans. Known as the Coalition for a free world they provide political support and send supplies from the Bay Area to their counterparts in Central America. Besides these Central American groups the coalition includes carp and the Fourth of July movement an organization founded by Eldridge Cleaver. Both carp and the Fourth of July movement are

affiliated with the Unification Church. Now they are planning a San Francisco forum on Central America focusing on communism in the region. The Coalition for a free world has gone beyond demonstrations and proselytizing and now has its hand in international politics. And you will hear what I give you is a revolution at the February 18th forum. The featured speaker was Adolfo collateral commander in chief of the FDM primary contre group funded by the regular administration collapse by themselves. What it would take a lot of time there will be a lot of stuff and we have to will and that's what we are doing and that we believe that many factors will converge. I was forced to really examine what was going on in the communist countries. In the audience were representatives of the Unification Church while the moonies are busy organizing and demonstrating with the Contras in the Bay Area. They are also active in Latin America. I begin here with Reverend Moon appears to be doing is taking a philosophical position that most Americans might share EMI communism and then. With that philosophical position that attempting to influence political leaders and in several Central American countries particularly apparently in Honduras today to a smaller extent in the Guatemala El Salvador. And it appears there's always some sort of political leadership for the Dennis lies with. It appears that ther generally is a financial element as well in Latin America. The Unification Church works through cows. An organization established in 1980 by Bo he pock Reverend Moon's right hand man.

POC was a founder of the Korean CIA. Oh he POC is Reverend Moon's assistant. He's of the last several years he's been a very shadowy figure from what many of us on the outside can see. He seems to have been a moon's point man in arranging a lot of connections with high level personnel down in the Central and South America. In 1983 as the Honduran role in the Central American conflict became critical because they helped consolidate financial and military support for military dictator Gus Davo Alvarez until April 1984. Alvarez coordinated the actions of the Honduran army with the CIA and the FDA in the Reagan backed conferee forces. Recently Alvarez was reportedly named head of the Unification Church anon Doris. You know it's not at all surprising it's a ploy. Obviously it's the the political intentions of the Honduran government are pretty clear and the kind of anti-communist the

prestige of having somebody who is politically active in an anti-communist way and politically needed saved by the Reagan administration and anti-communist way to have that person where the badge of the Unification Church would be a real plot for Moen. I mean it's the kind of the sort of the the coup that he's constantly looking for somebody with a title that he can associate with the movement. Last November the Honduran Catholic bishops denounced the government's association with cows. Forcing the Moonies to keep a low profile there. But cows it has been on the move in other parts of the cut. In Guatemala El Salvador Argentina and Chile. But nowhere have the Moonies been as successful as in Europe way over the last decade they've bought a bank hotel and a newspaper and they virtually control Uruguay's only real industry tourism. The president of the statewide California College Republicans and the president of the Berkeley Campus

Republicans are among a growing number of young conservative activists who have attended these junkets paid for by CASA and at a statewide GOP youth conference held at Lake Arrowhead California Young Republicans got into trouble when they solicited a contribution from cows. And as we got down within the last couple of weeks before the conference was supposed to occur we found that we were short to the tune of approximately $5000 of what we needed. And so the Treasurer. I. Started looking for other contributions and she had had contact with the group and had been offered their assistance and so when she came up short five thousand dollars she went to them to see if she could get a donation from them and they offered to cover the entire amount that we were short and she accepted the donation. Tim beer and Treasurer Jackie Clair had both attended seminars in Washington Clair new houses affiliation with the Unification Church before inviting them to

speak at the conference. And before she solicited the money the keynote speaker at the conference was Thomas Ward director of other speakers included White House adviser Morton Blackwell and California assemblyman Robert Naylor. To me if there's full disclosure and if you're not relying financially on the organization I want to present a point of view and there's an opportunity for contrary points of view I don't. That's that's a free speech that's the American way. So I don't have that much of a problem with it. I think that anyone in political office or in a governmental position is going to be a little nervous about the association factor with an organization like that. It's not so much the presentation as the financial support probably raises the question the $5000 contribution was returned to cows but Iowa Congressman Jim Leach has become concerned with other moony attempts to influence the Republican Party. About three years ago I started to get some reports that church members are

currently trying to infiltrate by colleagues Republican circles and no big deal but in the Army because I represented one of the colleges they were involved in. But what did become alarming was when you started to see the financial ties that developed between the Unification Church and some of the New Right groups that are playing a very prominent role in American public life today but particularly within my political party the Republicans. Reverend Moon has aligned himself with the new right on two issues anti communism and tax exemptions accorded to religious organizations. Now he is being charged with tax fraud. And his case is on appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court. Moon argues that the Unification Church is a legitimate religious organization and is eligible for tax exempt status. A recent investigation by The New Republic magazine found that cults that manage to get classified as churches are released from the duty to file annual financial

disclosure reports with the Internal Revenue Service. This means that cults can keep their business dealings under wraps. It seems that Reverend Moon has taken full advantage of this situation by redirecting tax refunds into his profit making enterprise. The Reverend Moon and his enterprise game appears to be one of international dimension with. Emissions factories and South Korea with banks casinos in South America. With efforts to establish newspapers around the world all with with NS in mind that I think are at best described as unsavory and perhaps. Representing a very serious challenge to the American way of life. Meanwhile as Reverend Moon continues his fight in the courts his influence continues to grow. The Washington Times has gone national. Plans to open offices in the U.S. and it seems that moon will continue

in his attempts to influence the New Right and other conservative American organizations.
