- Dorothea Lange's documentary photographs captured the despair and hope of the 1930s. This first episode is not so much about her work itself, but about the woman who spent a long, rich, and frequently painful life working for the enrichment of the human condition. Dorothea Lange died in October 1965. She had been suffering for twenty years from cancer. Aware of her limited lifetime, she made available to NET every possible assistance to produce this documentary of her life and work. Miss Lange has prepared a one-woman exhibition of her work during the past fifty years for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Museum now presents this as a posthumous tribute, beginning January 24, 1966. This episode, presented to coincide with the exhibition, was filmed while Dorothea Lange was preparing for it. As she examines a lifetime's work, the episode goes back in time with her to highlight her life and career, to share with the artist her soul-searching about her work and her philosophy as a photographer. It also includes conversations about her exhibition with her son and with John Szarkowski, curator of photography for the Museum of Modern Art, and intimate episodes from her daily life in her beautiful California home and with her family at their beach house. Dorothea Lange was born in 1895. At an early age she became interested in photography and spent more than half a century developing new techniques while continuing to work in the field. Using a skillful eye, she recorded the plight of the men, women and children who fled the Dust Bowl of the Middle West and Southwest in the depression years and by her pictures helped to make the nation aware of a problem it had ignored for years. She had been selected to join Roy Stryker's special group for the Farm Security Administration to tell the story of the migratory workers. She lived with them and documented their lives. With Dr. Paul Taylor, whom she married, she produced a book of pictures and text that depicted what they had seen - "American Exodus." While spending a great deal of her life in the hospital and while constantly in pain, she continued with her photography. We see her selecting pictures for her exhibition from this great output - extracting items that she feels capture an essence, the universality of a situation, to suggest the possibilities of her medium to someone else, and to stir minds by the immense variety and richness of human life - of which she was so well aware. This film won a Frank Stauffacher Award in the 1965 San Francisco International Film Festival, in the category of "Film as Art."
