ms bee this is john g fuller and i like to read you my book incident at exeter unidentified flying objects over america now published in july by gp putnam's sons riverside radio are invited to this into from my book a weekly series of programs presenting authors reading from and commenting on their own recently published work our guest on this program is john fuller author of the money changers and gentlemen conspirators he's perhaps best known for the column trade winds in the saturday review now here again is mr fuller i begin the book in the preface which explains the reason for my getting into this subject in this book it was in and it was in mid september of nineteen sixty five i learned of the incident at exeter report which was interesting because it was on the official records of the police department and verified by two offices of the department whose character reliability and composure and crisis have been certified firmly by their superior

officers for the incident was observed by at least five people at a distance an overtime period that allowed for clear unmistakable observation exeter lies in a surpassingly beautiful slice of southern new hampshire where the atlantic tall pine forests and pre revolutionary homes and joined to create the background for a mystery mr is fantastic and sleep and sweeping as a legend of sleepy hollow next were the most vivid trappings of science fiction a dozen miles northeast east is portsmouth home of the naval base since eighteen hundred and now host of the pease air force base autumn here is brilliant and hurts the eyes you approach the town from the east colonnade of burnt our engine russert michael's past the old harrison house on water street a historical relic of the eighteenth century and continue on to the center of town here where front and water street marches are stone bandstand with the townspeople still gather on a summer evening for a brassy cancer

not far up the hill and from strangers phillips exeter academy spawning ground for ivy league hopefuls a dozen parking meters down from the stone bandstand the exeter police department occupies a dwarf size suite of rooms and a hulking brick monstrosity bearing the architectural scars of the industrial revolution as a friendly informally about the playstation perhaps because its eyes created an embassy all its own for the most part that that camels the usual routine any new england town of sixty five hundred residents might face high school pranks occasional drunk the tavern brawl a family fight an unmarked warehouse of power here and there and a continuous global of automobile accidents the townspeople are you a sturdy yankee yeoman stop very racial groups who settled in exeter during the industrial revolution or the academic cluster at phillips academy it was nearly a month before it clear my schedule after i learned of the case and i ride to new hampshire on wednesday october twentieth nineteen sixty five

for an appointment with the officers involved but from a new jean bertrand and david huntley exeter police force it was the beginning of a sort which had continued was which was to continue for many weeks sometimes on the basis of an eighteen or twenty hour a day the point of the surge was to find the most logical possible explanation for a dramatic an unusual circumstance involving an unidentified flying object or us all as the air force likes to call and if it not been for the transistor tape recorder i carry i would have serious misgivings about completing the project the reports that i recorded seems so improbable so other otherworldly the written notes alone might not have been enough to convince both the editors of organizing and the publishers of this book that over sixty people testified to what they saw with intensity and conviction but anyone listening to the many hours of taped interviews cannot doubt the sincerity honesty of the people involved nor was our opportunity or desire for collision for many of those who testified were widely separated from each other several experience

low level encounters with ufos a related with one self conscious conviction that would've been almost impossible to find their stories they severed genuine shock while the interviews in cold type cannot convey all this conviction is important to remember that it is their underlining the fact that these conservative new england people are staging what they believe to be the whole truth all the dialogue in the book recounting these experiences is taken verbatim from the tapes this book was no sooner completely ufo reports began to break out in unprecedented numbers all over the country after my research in exeter i was convinced that this will happen surprise that it had not happened center for the first time the general press began treating the subject with respect i knew that actually there was only a microcosm a reflection of the story that was taking place or bounder take place in increasing frequency all over the world since one reporter cannot have to track down an effect of story i decided to use exeter because we're well documented case they're involving the police it could have been any

number of other places with sommer reports when the now famous michigan cases broken march nineteen sixty six house republican leader gerald ford formal request and congressional investigation and a wire services for his front page story stories from the nationwide press but when an air force investigation indicated that some of the signings might be attributed to methane or marsh gaspar swamp gas the press again backtrack and seized on this is a blanket explanation of the ufo phenomenon this distortion was deplored by dr j allen hynek head of the astronomy in northwestern university who himself had advanced the march yesterday in a letter to me on march twenty ninth nineteen sixty six he wrote quote i am in closing the actual press release i gave out of detroit because i wanted to have the full story of the release was not handled in the papers released which of course it really is your note my insistent insistence that the swamp sightings and they're highly

likely explanation does not constitute a blanket explanation for the ufo phenomenon i'm afraid that point was missed two in his official release so badly distorted by the press dr hynek states the air force's asked me to make a statement in my findings to date this i am happy to do provide it is clearly understood that my state will refer to two principal evans is reported tonight it does not cover hundreds of unexplained report i have not investigated those i have recommended in my capacity as scientific consultant to the air force that confident scientists quietly study such cases when evidence from responsible people appeared to want such study and maybe much of potential value the signs in such events we know very great deal more about the physical world in nineteen sixty six and we didn't at age sixty six but by the same token the people you're twenty sixty six may regard this as a very incomplete in our scientific knowledge that deceived and other pressures and

payphone location unknown this is john g fuller and i'm waiting for my book ends in and at exeter unidentified flying objects over america now published in july by putnam after the initial incident really explore the police it soon found that it wasn't just one incident there was a continuous series of incentives which are still continuing while i was up there and are still continuing into the summer of nineteen sixty six it was time as recorded aa i cross examined over sixty people and tape recorder testimony i was amazed at the consistency of the competence and the reliability of the people who gave me this respected citizens technicians people who could differentiate between b forty sevens m b fifty twos we're halfway through the research about two or three weeks and a little research i was so amazed by what i'd found that i

decided to go back in your employ some it take for the owners of look magazine and for them the book publisher of the publisher of the book ends in a lecture on the way down i had my tape recorder in the car with me and i decided to take the moment to time and the memo write like this i opened it by saying i can understand why some kind of major news breaks should not be forthcoming on the subject of ufo's in the light of the material i've been gathering i say this after several days of intensive research in exeter in which i interviewed nearly sixty people and tape recorded hours of testimony the people who were given this testimony of unchecked out as far as character reliability or concern for the most part i would say that their judgment capability for range from average to better than average with testimony adds up to this there's overwhelming evidence that ufos are flying saucers do exist they seem to exist in an accountable numbers and move an incredible speeds in an aerodynamically impossible patterns they're

reported checked and verified almost continuously they hover for a considerable time often that less than three top level every they are reported to have landed at low altitude they sometimes assume a dome like shape women in her red or white glow a pattern of red poll city lights as frequently observed in some cases in other words a rib another and others are red whirling pattern is reported around the edge they're usually absolutely silent though in some cases the high frequency hum heard a move almost directly overhead of cars and people at times causing flight impact of these four women living in widely separate areas are afraid to go out alone at night and they refused to do so elise for people report stream large objects exceed eighty feet diameter or more rising slowly up from behind trees low altitude movement has been reported to consist of a yawning trade like motion wobbling in the air and moving slowly back and forth sometimes with a fluttering pattern like to leave at times is reporting to throw a brilliant red glow which pranks aside the white house is a brilliant red

beacon light up a wide area on the ground around at high altitudes and some cases seemed to assume the shape of a small desk in a relationship who attend head start and to a tennis ball you will follow reliable but off the record information from the pease air force base in portland's indicates frequent radar books and fighters are constantly scrambling to pursue these objects if this information is not officially comes from a reliable source the ids are often reported in the reef vicinity of high power transmission lines some of these locations and crowded with cars at night with a group citing sometimes reported no one has ever been harmed physically buying these objects of a psychological trauma has been evident the area covered by the research so far extends from hampton new hampshire on the coast some twenty miles west of derry new hampshire near manchester in most interviewers i was able to determine a reasonable capacity of that respond to to differentiate between a helicopter a balloon jet prop plane planets or stars some studies have been described in daylight when i got back to new york city

a brief visit to a power company to try to find something about this on the morning edition november first is i followed the half a dozen lead by phone that they're interested in mainly because they indicated the high frequency of sightings in the area at noon i stopped by the power plant and drink water road in exeter and spoke to a couple of the engineers for the excellent hampton electric company they heard many stories about unidentified flying object the object that they had not been aware that so many people read reporting over or near the high power transmission lines they were intrigued by the idea though unplanned investigated and said that the high voltage power lines to create an electromagnetic field and that if i didn't have any kind of affinity for electromagnetic fields a powerful been obvious attraction they're the no unusual voltage losses reported on the meters but then it will be possible for ninety two hander an electromagnetic field without affecting of old age the questions asked when the power lines could create the image of a ufo or brought up but since the phenomena i had been frequently appeared far from the lines and since most descriptions indicated that the

unidentified flying objects were structured craft the serious highly unlikely most descriptions also work on for st elmo's fire sung bars or ball like no other known phenomenon and made a mental note to check more thoroughly with the electric power companies later at the moment i planned began what i wanted to find a time to do since i started the research make a random check most random check followed i found like to walk into a gas station or a country store and drugstore steps on main street corner and get an amazing number of quite credible accounts of people having seen unidentified flying objects in the area of the reports coming from the vicinity of power lines are continuing through the research which has a six week from four sixty five the night of the night before the power blackout i cover was money no memories
