Description
Series Description
"For more than 15 years, Chicago area viewers have tuned in to Chicago Tonight for in-depth reporting and analysis. One of the few prime times news analysis programs in the country, Chicago Tonight regularly tackles the kind of news that television increasingly avoids. Politics, the economy, urban planning, ethics and the arts are among the bread-and-butter issues to which Chicago Tonight is committed and regularly devotes a full half-hour four nights a week, in addition to extended, one-hour specials when the subject matter warrants it. Chicago Tonight deserves a Peabody for the high standards it brings to all 200 shows produced last year. With a small staff, tight budget and short deadlines, Chicago Tonight consistently goes after complex stories and succeeds in producing balanced, compelling, intelligent television night after night. This entry includes a brief written description of each of the programs produced last year, as well as tapes of five that demonstrate the quality and range of Chicago Tonight. 'JAMA Firing' is an examination of the debate surrounding the Chicago-based American Medical Association, following the controversial firing of its journal editor of 17 years, Dr. George Lundberg. (2/3/99) 'Kosovo Strike' is a one-hour special that begins with President Clinton's live address to the nation six hours after NATO's first cruise missile attacks on Serbian bases in the former Yugoslavia. The show continues with expert foreign policy analysis of the president's twenty minute address, the strike and what the United States should do next. (3/24/99) 'Henry Kissinger/Kosovo' is a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Henry Kissinger about the situation in Kosovo, the U.S. policy toward China, and lessons about diplomacy and politics revealed by Kissinger in his new book, 'Years of Renewal.' (3/25/99) 'On the Road: How Do We Deal With Colorado's Crisis'' is a painfully honest one-hour special, broadcast one week after the Columbine High School massacre. This discussion on guns and school safety quickly metamorphoses into an uncomfortable discussion of cliques and cruelty among teens and the daily trauma associated with being an outcast kid. (4/29/99) 'What is Electronic Day Trading'' is an inside look at the phenomenon of electronic day trading, and what has led to this controversial, exciting and extremely risky boom in the markets. (8/31/99)"--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
