Description
Series Description
"As we draw nearer to the end of the millennium, we reflect on the events of past and look toward the future. The death of Princess Diana, the Asian currency crisis, the growth of the internet, and global warming are but a few of the major events that touched everyone's lives in 1997 -- everyone, that is, except for those who have deliberately turned away from the outside world. The Abbey of Genessee is an audio journey which takes an inside look at the lives of forty-seven monks and the reasons they reject the life most people live. "In the Genessee Valley in upstate New York, the monks at the Abbey, who abstain from the use of all media, allowed WXXI to interview them and document their way of life. In this program, they explain their decision to leave their homes and families to seek fulfillment through prayer, celibacy, and routine. They describe their struggles with boredom and doubt, and explain how being a monk is like flying to the moon. They ask the questions that everyone asks: What is the purpose of our lives? Does God exist? Can we be happy? Woven into these conversations are the sounds of the Abbey: music and prayers that begin at 2:30 a.m., the hum of the monks' bread ovens, and the crunch of their footsteps in the snow. "The Abbey of Genessee is a sound portrait of men with hope and purpose uncluttered by the cacophony and confusion that surround most of us everyday."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
