Description
Series Description
"THE BACK OPERATION takes viewers into the operating room to show from start to finish a surgical procedure to correct spinal curvature. Originally presented live on public television, the program follows doctors at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia as they operate on a 27-year-old patient with scoliosis. "When Richard Balderston, M.D. makes his incision on Deborah Arizin's back, viewers are able to look over his shoulder. Dr. Balderston, one of a handful of orthopaedic surgeons specializing in surgical treatment of adult scoliosis patients, describes the procedure as he works while Richard Rothman, M.D., Ph.D. hosts the program. "In addition to the operating room scenes, THE BACK OPERATION includes a pre-recorded interview with the patient, a visit to a scoliosis support group, a look at earlier and sometimes bizarre methods of treating scoliosis and a review of common back problems and ways to treat them. "THE BACK OPERATION, which was WHYY's highest-rated local program, was called 'a success by any measure' by the Philadelphia Inquirer. The overwhelming viewer response -- 400 phone calls in two days -- indicated that the program engaged WHHY's viewers. Callers termed the program 'magnificent' and 'a great public service,' and asked for updates on the patient's condition. Dozens of inquiries about back problems were referred to the hospital and Dr. Balderston has scheduled 22 spinal surgeries as a result."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
