"'Fear On the Inside' chronicles a week in the life of a Chicago public high school teacher trying to escape domestic violence. Anna (a pseudonym) keep an audio journal after her estranged husband threatens to kill her and their baby at gunpoint. She takes listeners through her struggles with the police, her daily life as a mother and teacher, always looking over her shoulder and afraid to leave her apartment. "'Fear On the Inside' is a unique and powerful exploration of some of the reasons women remain in abusive relationships and the implications of ending them. The audio journal format allows Anna to tell her story in her words. It is a rare opportunity to hear a first person account of the daily fears and frustrations facing battered women, the decisions they make and why. And it reveals the courage and strength required to end domestic abuse and put the abuser in jail. "The documentary first aired in May 1994 on WBEZ-FM in Chicago. It was rebroadcast in June on NPR's All Things Considered [underline or quote'], after the O.J. Simpson story broke, and later in the year on the on the Soundprint documentary series. As I do not have the WBEZ host introduction on tape, I am including the Soundprint host introduction. The body of the piece is the same as the originally broadcast."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
