- Description
- Program Description
- "Jac Venza, Director of Cultural and Arts Programs and Executive Producer of the award-winning GREAT PERFORMANCES series for Thirteen/WNET, has been the leader in bringing quality drama, dance, and music to public television with series such as AMERICAN MASTERS, IN THE SPOTLIGHT, DANCING, and CITY ARTS, and by providing an outlet for limited series such as AMERICAN VISIONS, THE ADAMS CHRONICLES, and BBC and Granada productions such as Brideshead Revisited and the complete plays of William Shakespeare. By creating a television home for the arts he has brought extraordinary distinction to the medium as well as front row seats to millions of Americans across the country, encouraging viewers to actively support the arts through television's energizing and educational powers. "As head of drama for WNET, Jac Venza produced the system's first weekly national drama series, NET PLAYHOUSE, from 1966 to 1973. This series established the first drama units in public television and initiated international co-production for the young fourth network. Mr. Venza proceeded to create the performing arts series GREAT PERFORMANCES, and within its framework the concepts of THEATER IN AMERICA and DANCE IN AMERICA, inspiring television collaboration with performers and artistic companies throughout the country. During his quarter-century at the helm as Executive Producer for GREAT PERFORMANCES, the series has presented over 500 performing arts programs that have garnered some 50 Emmy awards. Artists who appear on the series know that Jac has created an environment in which their work will be televised with sensitivity and respect. "GREAT PERFORMANCES has been the television home to most of the world's greatest performing arts companies ? and, in many cases, it has been their only television home in America. TV Guide has called GREAT PERFORMANCES 'a landmark in the history of television,' adding, 'no series title has ever been better earned.' WNET strongly feels that a Peabody Award would be a most fitting and appropriate tribute to Jac Venza's unswerving vision, exemplary taste, and extraordinary skill."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
