Description
Episode Description
"With the U.S. planning to cut back on soldiers and weapons, what will the future hold for America's defense industry? That is the opening question of this half-hour special 'Swords into Plowshares,' which aired on The Nightly Business Report on May 28, 1990 (Memorial Day). "The program looks for answers on several different levels. It begins with two 'cases in point', focusing on affected companies and their efforts to deal with the dilemma - with reports from Hartford on Pratt and Whitney (aircraft engines) and from London on General Dynamics (tanks). "Perhaps no one is more personally involved with the military spending issues posed by the apparent end to the cold war than U.S. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. In an exclusive interview, he elaborates on his reason for opposing a drastic winding down of military spending at this time. In the same report, Correspondent Dennis Moore of looks at the conflicting views of some senators and congressman -- including those who want to cut spending more than Cheney, and others who want to preserve projects Cheney wants to axe. "Defense cutbacks also can be problem for regional economies. The next two segments look at a city and a state whose economic bases stand to suffer -- one as a result of a base closing; the other as a result of layoffs at local defense contractors. "Finally, for an international perspective, the program closes with two reports from overseas. One discusses how Japan is trying to build up its defense industry. The other looks at Soviet efforts to shift its defense industry to civilian applications."--1990 Peabody Awards entry form.
