First, an interview and call-in Q&A with author and psychologist Jean Shinoda Bolen about her newest book, Crossing to Avalon. She speaks about her spiritual journey, meeting with the Dalai Lama, and her Jungian beliefs. In the second part, various students and staff of San Francisco State University gather to discuss a scandal at the school involving tensions between the Women's Studies department and a male student, a controversial magazine article in a student publication called Prism, a sexual harassment allegation, and debates over the First Amendment. Guests are Ron Harris, April Allison, John Burks, and Cynthia Walker. Listeners, the majority of whom sympathize with the accused student and condemn the Women's Studies department, call in with questions and comments for the group. After the episode, Ray Suarez previews an episode of Talk of the Nation on the subject of pushing back against the complexity of modernity to live a simpler life. Korva Coleman reports the headlines, including a story about health care reform with audio from Republican Bill Archer and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski; and Israel's withdrawal from Gaza with a report from NPR's Paul Miller.
Series Description
"The entry gives a sense of the broad range of topics covered on this public affairs program which airs daily M-F on public radio KQED in San Francisco. We include a program on why people don't vote (from city hall), a state-wide broadcast on Health Care, a broadcast from Rwanda, AIDS and Profit Politics and an interview with famed physicist Murray Gell Mann. The program covers- rather extensively and with true depth- international, national, state and local matters of concern and public interest and interviews a host of people in all sciences, news making areas of many stripes-all programming passionately dedicated to higher discourse and high quality in radio broadcasting."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
