Description
Series Description
"KCRW requests the judges of the Peabody awards to consider this public radio station for its overall achievement in quality radio programming. Under the leadership of Ruth Seymour, its general manager and program director for the last 22 years, KCRW has created a renaissance in radio. In this era of single format programming, it is rare to find one station that excels in music, public affairs, drama and spoken word. Under the guidance of Ms. Seymour, KCRW has played a leadership role championing NPR News, as well as in campaigning for the continuation of federal funding for public broadcasting. In cooperation with Amnesty International, KCRW has made a serious contribution in the cause of human rights. In 1995, KCRW became one of the first radio stations in the country to stream its programs over the Internet. KCRW is one of the most-listened to radio stations on the web. Everyday Internet users from more than 42 countries visit and listen to KCRW online. By almost any standard'quality programming and awards, weekly audience (over 425,000 persons), membership (51,000), and on-air fundraising ($1.24 million in 11-days)'KCRW has become a leader in public radio. The station is important in the civic and cultural life of Southern California."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
