- Series Description
- "AIDS: The San Diego Story was a four-hour, live simulcast between KPBS-TV, the Public Broadcasting station in San Diego, and KSDO radio, a commercial AM station. The purpose of this program was to provide San Diegans the latest information on AIDS, and to present local experts who could answer their questions about a variety of topics. "The program was divided into four one-hour segments: medical updates and research information; patient care; education; legal, political and ethical issues. Each segment started with a feature report which introduced the audience to the human side of this disease. Following the report, a panel responded to questions from the co-moderators, viewers at home via telephone, and a live studio audience. "At the beginning and end of each segment we presented a number of resource phone numbers; short quizzes for the audience to test their knowledge; and opinion polls in which the viewers could register their views. During the 'Education' section, we also showed a number of PSAs from around the world, and excerpts from AIDS films being shown in the schools. We also arranged for the local Red Cross hotline to extend their hours into the evening to answer questions and provide referrals. "This unprecedented collaboration between a commercial radio station and a public broadcasting station was due to the total commitment of both entities to providing the public with as much information as possible about this deadly disease. By joint forces, we felt we could reach a much larger viewing as well as listening audience. "During the production of the program, we worked very closely with the many organization and individuals in San Diego who have been involved with AIDS. In the weeks preceding the airing, the two stations held a joint press conference for representatives of the print media; ran a series of promotional ads on both the radio and TV stations; mailed out thousands of fliers to local hospitals, schools, churches, volunteer groups, gay organizations, gay bars, etc.; and paid for ads in local newspapers."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
