Series Description
"THE HUMAN COMMUNITY is a junior high life/[environmental science] series composed of fifteen 15-minute programs that embrace aspects of human population growth, use and storage of chemicals, present and future energy sources, and human manipulations of organisms/environment. While addressing established specific instructional objectives, this series introduces students to crucial life science topics, reveals current information, stimulates interest for further individual study, and intends to influence attitudes by broadening perspectives. "The two programs selected for preview are 'Toxic Wastes' and 'Species Modifications'....'Species Modifications' is a traditional documentary approach that typifies the series in its treatment. Again, all footage is original, with many scenes taken on-location at North Carolina State University laboratories. While initiating with less controversial materials[,] the program reaches a gripping conclusion when relating genetic research back to humans, with special effects designed and completed within the camera.
