Description
Program Description
"The Democratic Presidential Debate from Dartmouth College with moderators Ted Koppel and Phil Donahue was the first meeting in front of a national audience by the candidates for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. Sponsored by the House Democratic Caucus, the three hour debate established a new standard and approach to political debates. James P. Gannon, editor of the Des Moines Register said, 'The Dartmouth Debate will be the one against which all others are measured.' "The first 90 minutes of the debate, moderated by ABC's Ted Koppel, was a free-wheeling discussion of issues, personalities, and the similarities or differences among the eight candidates. This segment was unstructured and uncontrolled except for Mr. Koppel's instantaneous synthesis of the ideas and arguments presented. The second 90 minutes saw Koppel turn the debate over to talk-show host Phil Donahue standing in the midst of the 800 person audience in Dartmouth's Spaulding Auditorium. Donahue, in the familiar style of his syndicated series, presented questions from audience members to the candidates and followed those questions with his own pointed interrogation. "The lack of formal structure, the audience participation, and the lively quality of the debate and discussion were unique and distinctive features of this milestone in the history of political campaigns."--1984 Peabody Awards entry form.
