- Description
- Series Description
- "On January 10, 1987, KCET launched CALIFORNIA STORIES, a richly varied, locally produced, half-hour documentary series exploring a single subject each week. Among the twenty-six (26) programs aired to date, CALIFORNIA STORIES has presented public policy issues and the political process; programs on science, technology and the search for knowledge; the arts, the intellect, the delight of crating; performance; profiles; and reflections of the areas ethnic and cultural diversity. Unique in its commitment to in-depth and compelling reportage, CALIFORNIA STORIES is represented here by three (3) programs: 'The Addicted Brain' (1-31-87) an informative essay on the biochemistry of addiction by producer Roger Bingham; 'Over-Exposed: Chemicals in the Workplace' (5-30-87), a provocative look at the widespread use and toxic effects of chemical solvents in work environments, produced by Teya Ryan and Jill Morrison; and 'Art: Off the Wall' (10-31-87), an innovative journey through Southern California's intriguing 'performance art' scene, produced by Teya Ryan. Several of the programs have contained write-in/call-in community outreach messages that connect viewers with specific information and services. During this first year, CALIFORNIA STORIES has also looked at ocean pollution; adult illiteracy; strained relationships between Blacks and Koreans; the local dairy industry; the lack of community-based mental health services; and presented programs on plea bargaining Arab/Jewish 'dialogue' groups; human sexuality; life in a nursing home, and a profile of author/teacher Norman Cousins. For its commitment to local documentary programming, and for honoring the challenge of excellence demanded by our viewer/subscribers, we believe CALIFORNIA STORIES is worthy of a George Foster Peabody Award."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
