Description
Program Description
"THE SLEEPING BEAUTY is an ice skating ballet, based on the original story by Charles Perrault, and set to the music of Tchaikovsky from the score to the Petitpas ballet version. The music was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bramwell Tovey, specifically for this version. "The program stars Olympic medalists Robin Cousins (Gold, '80) and Rosalynn Sumners (Silver, '84), with Patricia Dodd (4 times English Ladies' Champion) and Shaun McGill (Canadian Professional Champion) and 12 other world class skaters. The choreographer is Lars Lubovitch, the director was Tom Gutteridge producer, Bernice Olenick and Executive Producer, Colin Ewing and Greg Harney. It is in three acts, and tells the story of the fairy tale from the christening of the newborn baby princess and the spell cast by the evil witch, to the awakening of the Princess 100 years later. We believe it demonstrates that figure skating need not only be 'athletic' but can provide an artistic experience, for both children and adults, and translates the fairy story onto the ice with taste. The program was a co-production of WGBH Educational Foundation and Anglia TV, (Norwich, England) and was taped in an abandoned airplane hangar near Norwich."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
