Program Description
"BLEACHER BUMS is a unique program in local television; a drama written, produced and acted by local talent. It proves that drama is not the province of network television, and that it can be done well by local television stations. "The baseball comedy-drama brought together the original cast of Chicago's Organic Theater Company to recreate a successful Chicago stage play for the larger audiences television plays to. The play is about baseball, the fans, and the Cubs -- who have gone pennantless for 32 years. But it is also a study of personalities, dealing with the thoughts and feelings of a diverse group of people who happen to have a common bond. "The play is set entirely in the right-field bleachers of Wrigley Field, and takes place during a game between the Cubs and their archrivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. The entire production was done in the WTTW studios, in a set designed to realistically represent the bleachers at Cubs' Park. There were eight principal actors; 35 extras were used to create a crowd atmosphere.
