- Description
- "The tapes enclosed document a broadcast effort sustained over five weeks when Alaska's state government experienced an unprecedented crisis: a special session called by the state Legislature to consider impeachment of the Governor. "In the winter of 1984-1985, the state signed a sole-source contract for office space in Fairbanks. One of the building's owners was a major campaign contributor to the Governor. That summer the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner disclosed that the Governor's office might have influenced the process. "A Grand Jury was impaneled. After granting immunity to a key witness, it issued a report recommending consideration of impeachment of the Governor, rather than indictments. The Legislature quickly convened in special session, and several weeks later concluded that the evidence against the Governor failed to rise to the 'clear and convincing' level required for impeachment. "APRN assigned a pair of reporters to cover the special session. Updates were provided through the Network's regular nightly news program, but also in morning modules designed to interlace with the national network program Morning Editionrun by APRN's member stations. They were originated at the Juneau member station, sent through dedicated lines and uplinked through satellite from Anchorage. APRN absorbed expenses, with some distribution funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through the National Public Radio Satellite Program Development Fund. "The coverage is submitted as a strong example of fundamental service to the public through careful and fair coverage of an historic event."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
