"KCET's critically acclaimed series begins its month long focus on health care issues with 'Emergency Room Collapse.' More and more emergency rooms are closing both temporarily and permanently. By law, if a hospital is oversaturated or understaffed and underfunded, it can legally close its doors to county ambulances. This program looks at the crisis caused by the fact that several hospitals have opted to close their emergency rooms permanently. Through the taped segments and in studio discussions, this program examines some of the reasons why these trauma centers/emergency rooms have decreased. It will also look at possible solutions including: legislation requiring employers to provide appropriate health care coverage; increased commercial property taxes, as well as others."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
