Description
Program Description
"Sunday, February 21, 1971, three tornados devastated towns and communities in the Mississippi Delta. President Nixon declared that portion of the State a disaster area and immediately ordered the Office of Emergency Preparedness to instigate a relief program. "The Mississippi Authority for Educational Television volunteered its services in communicating relief sources, planning and programs to the people in the stricken area. A one-hour special (videotaped in color) was prepared with NASA aerial photographs of the tornado-ravaged areas to show the location and extent of the damage. Immediately upon completion, Governor John Bell Williams provided a plane to fly the videotape to commercial station WABG-TV in Greenwood Mississippi, the heart of the destroyed area. In Addition, ETC Channel 29, Jackson, and three other commercial television stations whose signals reached into the Delta, broadcast the program. Audio tapes were also given to radio stations. Submitted here is [one-half] of that special telecast."--1971 Peabody Awards entry form.
