- Description
- Program Description
- "Survivors in The Sand is an hour documentary which presents the epic [struggle] of humans to successfully survive in the desert. The program focuses on the efforts of leading international Scientists in their quest to unlock the secrets of the world's arid lands. It also shows the lives of those who choose the live in the desert -- resilient individuals who attempt to balance the desire for prosperity with the need to sustain the fragile environments in which they live. "Filmed in Australia, the Middle East, and American Southwest, the documentary presents riveting stories from different global viewpoints. It also offers a historical perspective, showing the successes and failures of those who have come before us -- the Aborigines, the Anasazi, and the inhabitants of the ancient biblical city of Soussiya. "Survivors In the Sand is deserving of Peabody consideration as it addresses a fundamental issue facing our world. As human populations continue to exponentially explode, the impact on vital arid lands is substantially accelerating. What is at stake are some of the planet's most fragile, natural environments. The documentary takes the viewer to the [front] lines of this confrontation, as desert dwellers and [scientists] grapple with the problems of preservation versus subsistence."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
