"Listeners to 'Fables in Four Minutes' can expect to hear a traditional story, a contemporary urban folk tale, or a myth in the making. The show is an eclectic offering of material delivered in a variety of storytelling modes with the aim of entertaining and educating the listener at the same time. "The program began broadcasting on WXXI-FM (Rochester, NY) in January, 1990, as a regular weekly feature on 'The Sunshing Show.' Two years later, the program expanded to two broadcasts weekly, and in April, 1994, it was picked up by a local commercial station for 15 broadcasts weekly. This unique and popular feature has become a staple for both adult and young listeners. "'Fables in Four Minutes' merits Peabody consideration for its origination in a medium-sized market, for [its] uniqueness (no other stations to my knowledge have such an offering); mostly for its impact on our audience. People of all ages have been touched by the program. I receive letters and calls regularly that tell of the power of a story to move, teach, and inspire a listener. One listener puts its best: 'Fables in Four Minutes' has changed my life. I now get up fifteen minutes earlier just to listen."--1995 Peabody Awards entry form.
