Program Description
"'Adult Literacy in Fairbanks' looks closely at the lives and perspectives of four people who have achieved, or are struggling to reach literacy. The one-hour special opens with a discussion between literacy experts, who frame the problem. It then, in segments bridged by readings and brief thoughts from the learners, focuses tightly on each of the four--their struggles, achievements, and hopes. It closes with the thoughts of one literacy specialist as she reflects on the challenges adults face when they commit to learning. "My intent was to put a human face on the problem of adult illiteracy; to show the community that those who lack literacy do not also lack intelligence wit, ambition, or other 'positive' characteristics in common with our listeners. I also wanted to let the audience feel how hard it is to gain literacy skills after childhood--what anguish there is in failure, and triumph there is in success. "My hope is that this report stimulated thinking and discussion in our community, directed attention to the number and plight of people who are illiterate or semi-literate, and brought that population 'to life' for those who listened to the documentary, and to the series-version which aired the following month. I am submitting it for Peabody Awards' consideration in the hope that it meets the standards of service and quality sought by the Board."--1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
