- Description
- Program Description
- "Connecticut is a dichotomy of wealthy suburbs and impoverished cities, Ivy League education and generational ignorance. "We are a racially diverse state, yet have the most segregated public education system in the U.S. "Connecticut Public Television strives to create programs that, in turn, create better understanding between people of all races, cultures and ethnicities. We feel one of the best ways to achieve that goal is to celebrate our differences from a foundation deeply rooted in our commonalities. "Our entry of AMISTAD CONNECTICUT: A LEGACY REBORN is submitted on that basis. "The quest for freedom runs heavily through the fabric of the human soul. That is why the story of the Amistad revolt has significance to peoples of all races and cultures. A story, nearly 2 centuries old, virtually unknown until a recent Hollywood film brought it to prominence. "AMISTAD CONNECTICUT: A LEGACY REBORN was a three-hour compilation of original CPTV programming created to take the viewer first, through the historical narrative of the Amistad revolt: where Africans, kidnapped into slavery, mutinied against their oppressors, jailed, tried, and ultimately won their freedom at the bench of the U.S. supreme court'and secondly, into the future: profiling how the legacies of Amistad pertaining to freedom, truth and human rights can be applied into the millennium. "This 3-hour special premiered the rebuilding of the Amistad schooner, a virtual 'floating classroom' designed to educate generations to come about the Amistad story and its legacies'a piece of the Amistad story that will live on forever and touch many lives around this country and around the world."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
