- Episode Description
- "For 17 years, Jamie Butcher lay in vegetative state: He couldn't see, hear or feel anything. His parents wanted to bring him home from a nursing home to die, but the courts wouldn't let them. After years of fighting legal battles, they finally won. "'NewsNight Minnesota' reporter Melody Gilbert and videographer Denny Behr spent two weeks with Jim and Pattie Butcher as they watched their son die. Even as they discontinued feeding Jamie, they were once again challenged by several groups representing the disabled. Still, Jamie's parents were determined; they hoped their son would die of dehydration before the next court date. "Our 'video diary' captures an intimate look inside this family, from the day the Butcher's put a plug in their son's feeding tube to his death 11 days later. "It's one family's painful tragedy; it's also a lesson in the debate over the right to die."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
