Description
Program Description
"As many as half a million children in the United States are homeless, according to a Congressional report. They are vicious and tender, tough and vulnerable, burnt out and yet innocent. These are the children ministered to by the staff and volunteers of New York's [Covenant House], whose work is profiled in the hour-long documentary THE QUALITY OF MERCY, SAVING AMERICA'S STREET KIDS. "In THE QUALITY OF MERCY, the story of Covenant House is told through its staff and volunteers. The program is about what they do and why they do it. The program works on two levels. From the point of view of people who want to 'give something back', viewers encounter both the tragedy of homeless children and the hope that's demonstrated in the adults' experiences -- from stockbroker, opera lover Larry who cruises Times Square at night offering sandwiches, hot chocolate and transportation to the shelter, to volunteer counselor Patrick who literally took himself out of the gutter and drunkenness into a life of prayer and giving. Covenant House founder Father Bruce Ritter talks of how these people are living the beatitudes of the Gospel of Mathew. Far from a maudlin portrayal of philanthropy, THE QUALITY OF MERCY is inspiring in its look at ordinary people doing extraordinary work. With an introduction by Dan Rather of CBS News."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
