"Foreshadowing the current crisis in Iraq, A Wedding in Basra takes reporter Arthur Kent back to the Persian Gulf region to learn what life is like for average Iraqi citizens living under a dictatorial regime, United Nations economic sanctions, and the constant threat of War. The story of two young lovers, Ali and Sabar, provides the backdrop for a thorough examination of the successes and failures of U.S. policy towards Iraq. "Broadcast in November 1998, A Wedding in Basra was the first report on U.S. television detailing Sadaam Hussein's oil smuggling in violation of U.N. sanctions, including an on-camera acknowledgement and endorsement of sanctions-busting by Iraq's Ambassador to the U.N. A Wedding in Basra is arguably the only in-depth television report to have presented the human face of the Iraqi populace and suggest their importance as an ally to the United States.
