- The Nightly Business Report (NBR), produced by WPBT, is a nationally televised program of business news. It airs five days a week over a network of more than 250 public television stations. The program combines breaking business news with in-depth analysis, and stock market updates with corporate profiles. In what was considered broadcast television's first daily business news program, NBR premiered locally in January of 1979. WPBT pioneered this enterprising project at a time when business news was largely ignored by other television stations. WPBT recognized that a growing number of viewers wanted more in-depth reporting of economics and market analysis, so we set out to produce the station's most ambitious news project ever. "South Florida viewer response to the program was overwhelming from the very beginning (see attached viewer and newspaper comments). After a year and a half as a successful local program, NBR went national in October 1981. NBR's producers established a network of cooperating public television station bureaus for national coverage. The program was received nationally as it had been locally --with intense interest by a loyal viewing audience. "NBR now has 14 news bureaus around the world including New York, Washington, Tokyo, and London. The program is viewed by about 4.7 million people weekly (A.C. Nielson, February 1985). "Behind NBR's success is the vision of a station, WPBT, to create a nightly business news program for television--making it quality-oriented, with highly polished journalistic and production techniques.
