Description
Program Description
"This documentary examines the implementation of state legislated school reform policies in the Chicago Public schools through the eyes of one child and her classmates in a Chicago public school. In order to dig behind the political war being waged by the 'players' (state, city and educational leaders, administrators and school reform activists), this documentary approached the subject of school reform by focusing on the children who suffer from the lack of funds; sound management plan and unified leadership. "The documentary covered the funding and administration aspects by following the daily activities of one child, Minnie Blackwell, in one school, measured against the larger picture of the entire Chicago Public School system, the many players and the state of Illinois. By doing so, it broke down many of the complex issues surrounding reform into how these policies affected Minnie and her classmates -- students with remedial education needs in an overburdened, underfunded school system -- on a daily basis."-- 1993 Peabody Awards entry form. This program features interviews with the principal of Dyett Middle School, Dr. Yvonne Minor, and teachers of Dyett such as Linda Gaddis, in addition to interviews with government officials and education specialists such as Martin Koldyke, James Deanes, Charley Gillespie, Carolyn Vessel, Diana Nelson, Fred Hess, Ted Kimbrough, Jeffrey Mirel, Florence Cox, Bob Kustra, Arthur Berman, and Maxey Bacchus.
