Description
Program Description
"'Parenting in the '90s' is an on-going public radio series that is written and hosted by NJN staff member Linda Tesauro, who is to provide critical information for parents, teachers and other caregivers on the important life stages that children face today, and the skills that adults can use to communicate and help this generation cope. Each generation faces the new challenges and problems of their decade, and 'Parenting in the '90s' takes a refreshing approach to these demands. The delivery is simple and relaxed, and the result is an understanding of the universal feelings expressed by each generation. 'Parenting in the '90s' discusses a range of topics including choosing day care services, the needs of children of divorce, fetal alcohol syndrome, vaccination, communicating with teens, building self-confidence, assisting in your child's public school education and selecting a college, recognizing the signs of substance abuse in teens as well as enabling behaviors in parents, and more. 'Parenting in the '90s' teaches respect for children by focusing on solutions and deterrents to problems, rather than emphasizing the deficiencies of today's youth so often portrayed by the media. This feature has not only enhanced the sound of our broadcast schedule with important and interesting information, it has also allowed us to continue our mission as public broadcasters to inform, educate and entertain the citizens of New Jersey. 'Parenting in the '90s'' has been honored nationally for its contributions with a prestigious 1993 Gabriel Award for short features in radio. Presented by Unda-USA, the national Catholic association of broadcasters and communicators, the Gabriel winners are chosen to honor works of excellence in broadcasting which serve the audience through positive, creative treatment of issues of concern to humankind. 'Parenting in the '90s' has also received the 1993 Media Award given by the Middlesex County Commission of Child Abuse and Missing Children which honors those broadcasting professionals who have increased public awareness of timely issues affecting vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly and families."--1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
