Description
Series Description
"'What Is A Jew'' is an exploration of the essential nature of Judaism, its beliefs, history, rituals and culture. The programs take the form of a conversation between host Larry Josephson, a secular Jew with little knowledge of the religion of his grandparents, and Rabbi Ismar Schorsch, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Ten of the 52 programs will examine the ten most important Jewish holidays. Other threads will deal with Jewish ethics and morality, and Jewish music, both sacred and secular. (See supporting materials for more details). "This series represents a new approach to Jewish programming, a hard-edged, intellectual discussion rather than nostalgia or fluff. Music is an essential part of the program, one that adds an emotional and spiritual dimension to the discussion. A Hanukkah Special is a conversation about the history, rituals and present-day meaning of the holiday, artfully mixed with music sung by two fine cantors."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
