Description
Episode Description
"What happens to people who work and live with nuclear weapons? 'Nuclear Outpost' profiles the inner life of a nuclear [Air Force] base at Minot, North Dakota. In the midst of the Midwestern prairie is buried the greatest Minuteman II arsenal in the country. Central to this missile stockpile is the [Air Force] base which houses a B52 squadron. The combat crews who command these nuclear weapons are the subject of this documentary. Their relation to the nuclear world is strikingly different than ours. To us, nuclear implies an abstract, apocalyptic future. To the crews and surrounding farmers who live on a daily basis with these nuclear systems, the nuclear world has become routine and ordinary. 'Nuclear Outpost' probes this unusual atmosphere which operates as an isolated post within the greater world of events."--1983 Peabody Awards entry form. Captain Eddie Traylor demonstrates a day in the life of a pilot for the Strategic Air Command. Missileer Captain Larry Brown, along with Lieutenant Jim Schrudowitz, talk about the responsibilities and thought involved with managing an intercontinental ballistic missile.
