Description
Series Description
"A PBS screener began viewing CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE: WHAT YOUR CHILDREN SHOULD KNOW at her office, then decided to [finish] viewing the series at home, where her daughter joined her. When the show ended, the daughter told her mother that she had been previously molested. The screener then realized that this series about child sexual abuse is different from the others: by bringing abuse into the open, and letting children talk about it, this series solves the problem. "The purpose of CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE is education. First, the series convinces parents of the enormity of the problem; then it teaches children how to protect themselves; and finally, it gives both parents and children the tools with which they can prevent sexual abuse from occurring, or stop it if it is happening. "By taking the risk of talking to children about sexual abuse in an [open] yet sensitive way, the counselors in CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE are able to elicit the children's responses gently, without upsetting them. In this way youngsters are taught to protect themselves by trusting their 'uh-oh feelings,' and to believe that 'when you think something's wrong, then you're right.' "The results of the broadcasting of this series have been as startling as the scope of the problem itself. After watching the series, children across the nation have spoken up about being molested. In some cases, their admissions have led to arrests, as in St. Louis and Memphis (see attached newspaper clippings). "After two broadcasts, WTTW received more than 2,000 telephone calls and letters, praising the series and requesting more information. Nationwide, more than 30,000 letters have been received. A plea for education and information on this subject runs through these letters. Here it's expressed by a former victim: 'I shudder to think another child will go through what I did. Confusion is the greatest pain. Children need to know.'"--1984 Peabody Awards entry form. The speaker from King County Rape Relief talks to the children about different kinds of touches, different stories and experiences of special abuse, things to remember, and what they can do in case it happens to them. Frequently children shared comments and stories of their own.
