mucho mucho mucho mucho mucho mucho mucho through open doors to witness in our lives we each may choose the best of what has been the best of that which lives today the fashion us a key and from the minds of those who enter in this gift is given are still to give and yet to keep i give them that you really like and this happened to me or this thing with me and his guest george dan for
chairman of the department of architecture at the illinois institute of technology the series of programs rings do conversations with the good news of under or architect an educator beginning with his early formative experiences influences and projects and terminating in his current and his proposed works nice as you generally known was born in auckland on the german belgian border in the year of teaching eighty six happens the first capital of the holy roman empire and the focus of western culture in the early middle ages he's attended the cathedral school and aachen which had been founded in the ninth century by charlemagne it was an environment which profoundly impressed you architecture today has had
for highly creative and prophetic individuals to give it meaning direction first and vitality the late frank lloyd wright le can see a lot about this and he's gone girl and of them have made a significant contribution that is news about iran has more articulately achieving union of architecture and the means of our time which makes architecture possible in fact nice undeniably has made it clear in his work that a new aesthetic is uncomfortable when a straightforward ordered and reasonable use of the structure means available is employed and he says the first to say that without a collaborative spirit an expression of any form has no importance no stability no value today's program or treat the early years of lisa's life ending at about the time of the first world war
oh nice nice the idea of a structural architecture has been a very important one to have in this idea that in your mind to it attendance was a slow evolution of the at the beginning americans focus on architects in the conscience of it soon necessity and then they can think it ended and investing more simple things you know evolution and architects and because the moon was this new information this really is an object is isn't a veterans a day
early experience was in the building trades was not as if this season fourteen man's bones and became an apprentice sen dick bone and sentimental nature of comparative politics along the way for a story on the journal trends and so the city majid of something and the bending than the past and the past that has been caught up in the us and in those and then those summit too and wrote about experience its own solutions and so this was an
architectural impressions must've had a great founding in you're going to school and the cathedrals that certainly attempt to an american as an unknown and romance ended in june this is the argument is not this is an immense pile of in particular who would save its phones i've acted in itself of senators who saw the us but when the time for that i'm a servant a thousand patients has been how
the whole complex of tequila was more than this i just think that was amazing it was a gas main from canada's the roses and there's a shrine and i have those different logos than those in andover newton to win i didn't end in the us a child doesn't protect champions and sharpens and renaissance is an assumed name was one point is does having yes this is amazing what qualities you think of different periods here that made this one thing
even though it was built in the fifth century as soon as you do that in a ton in this sanction works in there and over to invade and the expression of a certain kind that these things fit the american different structures in the city this fit homeowners into the institute of churches in fact that was once quote the city of churches and tantalum and this church is certain to win who among estonians were among this and everything was in hong kong as i said earlier there is you have recognize that without unifying spirit there's no religion and strength
and a third as allies in new camera turf new two of action and if you have to you spoke with us that must be the clue to another remark that i've heard him say that that you found it very difficult in our time today to find the spiritual value which might be a unifying one is that we want the most indians an analyst jim zarroli independent and this is just certainly journalists to recognize that afternoon or flying for both of them as soon as the saying in fact those chilly and fifteen dead one of the other things in europe that you were more i was didn't question i know that you've talked about meal i think we have a picture of that and then we took a very interesting trip as a very young
man i think it was a gift there's plenty of so therefore was to size solve seventeen we can unring scientists are both two months and he's so interested from the fungus own love of gangsters staff of infections and so that you know is it was a chance and then demand on florence and in that particular let women listed this dome of ticket to join the rest of it and i think that this one of those forms you have others that noonan years but
nervous amendments and post birth planet is do you find really the strong winds and the teams and this is a huge stone well on this and then goes about those that autonomy and that there's the senate conceded this newness and need our attention it says those limits and then he went on to two and the wrong and you're not there's an inventor long when they are less than honest about lives in about in the news add to the biggest criticism isn't but you know
the most infamous been alone wounds ruined there's a new architecture of us left just for this reason this is a sort of constant then that the ticking nukes found that same spirit in that same straightforward simple instructions solution unlock the next to us and this is a book that is from the song is about is in spain isn't foreign visitors friends i know that they don't as he is the wrong both of clicker jones and it
is iphone and said soon record books and brian welcome all in the same character of dissent aren't alone in the farm's chances so in other words there was no nation the song when your first business news mission of faith in her lonely one as well the stricter dr miele i think has risen in reverse plans and not unusual that you should have the persepolis of educating a young man o n and this was an unknown months interest in their homes and in london
and his own new influence in the end we have a picture of that which was felt was a particularly good example of the gothic and showing the structure i think of this as the images and those who have been through that says new consumer stocks are incentives that and knowing that into you this campaign part of a starter about everything if you know this show started and you were given different idea about that because of the constructs the structure isn't mainly just the meaning of the constitution so that construction has been evicted to structure construction is really just the names by which
something his field notes the technique when your earliest and it's a bit less than outside of a social history of the election worked with us this has a lot of time they're finished the windows a surveillance in two and investing it in northern iraq so the simpler newton something this is the first architecture and workforce that that road soon as soon but investments newton the furniture maker at an end to the atlantic in an architecture that is
very long very terrifying accident in no fences and sofas for the first the thing for us and that his first songs in the meth in her cousin exhibition along nineteen hundred and going from start the profession that gave the moon after his money into their houses and dance was one of the neighbors didn't work in that there is an end of the assistance housing and foreign service and finished everything in the inside knowing about so vivid in the moon that in
this interview china and often the cost himself of a man who says that other side to a character as a matter of fact when he was the architect for the i think is the electrical there's an anomaly and german and then had been nearly everything to get to do you know from the road for those things soon learns financial loans than half of those in one thing and then voters in the designer's vision for other interesting said that one time when un when you are working with there and you were on the embassy and then in los angeles who's speaking at this time there's some contradiction in barron's work with is typical of the time i think that most of the time no more than the founder of map so to benefactor was in love and eight years but it was invented those
things this tune and a classicist a special next question and no i think it's in part to a blanket prohibition of the earth and then assistant rose has to cut this is fact those two years one really powerful two hours sort of the wrong ninety nine persons unknown person because of this and destruction says the monument on this and done about the same time about events in an unfinished mr mustafa <unk> without exception were architects in this time working with in a kind of contradiction not knowing quite what direction to go realizing it was certainly a surprise
in a moment an overdose one exception from the fire an attendant on the endeavor moon was a crisis is at any time but in favor of his own forms of us now individualistic he had a great talent without unlimited cowart i think it was one of the most important paper but the center's influences because tuesday's because of his soon individualistic men became too much something of him neither has addressed principal first through subjective and the objective her mom advanced living on it that they
just said that you have another in shingles work is that the incandescent gloom as lena discusses those who rode along the eighteen hundred yes on nineteen forty nurses and in ben volin of new buildings and thus no accident that an influence and then once was influenced by the end of the end the syrian love notice a strong bid influenced by and shoots a less than these targets in america from going to i think in the eighties in the
russians in various was the only is that and how does he come to the picture as an influence and there are the editing room where i get a nervous working both news and then there's mail service invented mcconnell no convention was him for the cronyism or two point than it is in the uk yes a man on the cover numerous they were an industrious family were they not i'm very interested in in the arts that they really interested in the sun do but to confirm both the nurses that will permit and to find this collection they wanted to oppose that the game was in
and then they asked me two made to stand for it and then there was also asked was hazardous and the new home of the year and as the sun and learn about the same time i came a new connection this bailout is and the nervousness very much interested in because as soon as both playing piano and started in construction and their home was really a political issue that the influence and they will and in soweto was soon is soon principles and a different
made this day from the italians and the incidence of this in the clintons thought i had to make her i think i read someplace and i made a note here called architecture up for our utility is among should forget stalin designing them as amanda haven't had no influence upon you for the government so in his stock exchange you have spoken man strengthen the statement about is live so you're your time at the corner using is that the ban on the us that is the us the most we're working with the corner where you lived with them i believe about a year and then sends it must've been a very
amazing experience to live and amongst these paintings the moon fifteen month and pulse four year and then became an expense of thing those are the fact that there is so and they're so close unelected that's when could we see the picture you have of the project such a good news for the economy over the senate as you have said led to a rather interesting development from the exposure to paintings different from american two to a biographer in finance and writer i wanted to vote for who you could pick by men advances from been
invested in the violence so often hazardous the turn edmonton thousand the moon who is this and yes and clan since then they've then they can find analysis a valid know there wasn't german than just a close win in the general and that you have said that from veterans you found most important intellectual host thirty rock is a sense i'm grateful cause there's a messenger it firm from
been a logger learned through wilkinson's of constant this nice at this time was there any influence felt upon new people in europe by that worker right in america frank lloyd wright you have an exhibition and then can look at the evidence in the moon when that is done was a publication of his for this is the good food and i love the love of a frozen and i think a lot of people in who are in fact the vote has to qualify all ideas offered encouragement to convey to the us when did at any time were you
aware of the invention of the skeleton construction in the chicago school of architecture jenny singleton used in this way the first patient i was wrong was the end of our new camp america and then they can make him on the boat the history of the conflict so you in honor of this particular notion at the time many of the span about takes about today to the situation of the first world war is or less and i think that includes about what we were going to cover in this program and i want to thank you very much we have been visiting with the distinguished architect

- Episode Description
- Episodes 110 - 113 of Heritage feature Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of this era's leading architects. George Danforth, the only interviewer on the four episodes, began his career in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology under the direction of Mies van der Rohe. He has been van der Rohe's student and friend for many years. In this episode, George Danforth gives a brief background description of the life and work of Mies van der Rohe, comparing him to other important modern architects. Then he joins van der Rohe to begin the episode proper. This first section of series deals with van der Rohe's early life, his first interest in medieval architecture, and his first tasks as an apprentice to an architectural firm. Van der Rohe tells of his trips in Europe, which exposed him to the work of other German, French and Italian architects, both modern and ancient. He talks of his work with the famous German architect Paul Berens, of the new school of architecture's influence on him and of the importance of Frank Lloyd Wright's work on European architects of this century. The episode alternates between shots of van der Rohe and Danforth and photographs of some of the buildings which van der Rohe comments on or feels are significant in his own development. Among the more exciting moments in this episode are van der Rohe's brief statement of his architectural philosophy. "Without a unifying spirit there can be no form," he remarks, contrasting medieval architecture with some more modern styles. He also distinguishes between structure and construction as he understands these two words. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
