The stations that carry this show live and God bless you, you missed the first eight minutes but it was just the usual fill. And hi, I'm the usual Harry, this is Lesho and did you happen ladies and gentlemen to see the best deal day festivities? Not the highlights that were on the local or the network news but one of the cable channels, arts and entertainment and commercials and more commercials. They carried a lot of the festivities, they carried the BBC coverage so you got to hear a guy with a British accent and a guy with a very thick French accent which to me gave it a whole kind of a transatlantic feel, which I like. But boy, were those great fireworks, attention, city of Santa Monica, those are the kind of fireworks you can put off a dawn and people will notice them and not just because they wake them up with the sound. They notice them because you can see them, beautiful fireworks. Congratulations, Paris, do it again, about a hundred years from now, won't you?

A tale of two cities, Washington, T.C., normally is the kind of town that if people are buzzing there about a news story, whether we deserve to or not, we in the rest of the country are bombarded with it just because the kids in the capital can't keep their mouths shut about what they can't keep their mouths shut. But interestingly enough, there is a story that according to my friends in Washington has been preoccupying dinner conversation in our nation's capital for about the last three weeks and my bet would be that you haven't heard about it or have heard very little about it. This is for real, ladies and gentlemen. It's a story that was broken by the other daily newspaper in Washington, the Washington Times, which many alleged, this is incidental, but maybe not so incidental. Many alleged has ties to the Unification Church of Reverend Sun Myeong-moon. Anyway, the story relates to the existence during the Reagan administration of a high level, well, back up, the existence during the Reagan administration of a gay prostitution ring, which had high level contact in the White House so much so that certain members of the ring were taken on midnight tours of the White House.

And the paper has gone so far as to publish a photograph of a secret service man with one of the members of the ring in one of the midnight tours. Now, here's the only reason I bring this up. Why don't we hear about this? It sounds like good fun. What's the matter with us? Has the rest of the media not picked this up just because of the Washington Times being kind of on the fringe of reputable journalism, so they think like they would know. Or just because the names haven't gotten high level enough. Or is there another reason? I just, I raised this just because I know that some people in the audience like to like to have conspiracy theories. And there's been a shortage of grist for that particular male recently. So there you go, chew on that.

And also from our Washington file, just a tribute to Vice President Dan Quail, who was in turn paying tribute as so many of us are. Right about now to the momentous event that occurred 20 years ago, the Apollo moon landing. Vice President Quail yesterday paid tribute to it as the day when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Lucan walked on the moon. Now, we know who he was thinking about. Buzz Aldrin. Buzz Lucan is a Republican congressman who was recently charged with, and I believe convicted of sex with an underage young woman. Natural mistake. Easy to make. If he'd only studied more Latin, you know, he wouldn't make mistakes like that. Ladies and gentlemen, they'll be telephone fun on this edition of Lesho for for some of you. But meanwhile, in the in the waning moments of our paying tribute department, let's stop and smell the coffee that was brewed last Tuesday at the end of the first inning of baseball's all star game. Well, sir, all of us are indeed proud and grateful and delighted that you could time out to spend an inning and in minutes of the of the meeting, it should be duly noted that we had the most runs in the first inning of an all star game in 10 years.

So you brought a little excitement to the night. What I'd like to think that I'm so sorry that it's all over from me now and I have to confess I was a little uptight because as I say, when I was sitting up in a place like this, I had to tell the people what was happening because they couldn't see it. No, I get a little self conscious when I know the people can see what's going on. We were so thrilled just to have you at it. So thank you very much. This is the follow-up letter to the invitation to our friends in the entertainment industry. We hope you enjoyed the spin magazine party at the Hard Rock Cafe. However, we are well aware that some of you had difficulty gaining entrance to the party and that some people did not get in at all. Excluding press, 250 people were invited to the party. More than 600 people showed up. Most of those additional 350 were friends of friends invited by a band came with five other guests on one invitation or some other arrangement. Even after admitting some 150 guests over the fire code. Don't tell the chief. Some people were bound to be left out and there was no way to differentiate over who was most entitled to be admitted with the limited space. Though most people remained reasonable and patient. Some guests barraged staff without rages requests, verbal abuse and threats. Tempers were bound to become short under those circumstances and the Hard Rock dormant unfortunately responded to some abuse in kind.

And for that we offer heartfelt apology. The spin party is one of many events that will be held at the Hard Rock Cafe in the coming months and we would like you to feel welcome. Should we again have the opportunity to have you as our guests? Thank you. I should like to feel that way. And just let's just leave it at that. Now ladies and gentlemen, this is sort of an annual tradition that doesn't happen every year here. But it's happening this year. It is happening. Many are the ways in which various parts of the media industry attempt to handicap the race among the three networks. One of the advertising agencies makes a specialty of having their media gurus see all the pilots for the new season. And then predict which ones are winners and which ones are losers and how various networks will fare and so forth. As you know, as you may know, if you've been with this program for a while, we got a different way of doing it.

We play you the songs that each of the networks has chosen as its anthem to go forward into the new season. And moments from now we will ask you to vote for your favorite network based on those songs. This is a gimmick that's only good if you're listening to the show live at 11 o'clock AM Pacific time you can call. And I'll give you the number moments from now. First of all, because they're number three and they're trying so darn hard, let's hear a little bit of the backstory about the song and the campaign that CBS has chosen. Now we're ready to address the issue at hand. Today we're going to get ready, forget ready. There are many strengths to our Get Ready slogan. It evolves from last year's Are You Ready campaign. It provides consistency and continuity and look and feel. It's part of our street language. It communicates the sense of momentum and energy. It's a battle cry for stations and the network.

We see an opportunity and we're grabbing on. Get Ready sets the tone that CBS will enter the 90s aggressively with a new energy, a new feel. The 90s will be our decade. The Get Ready campaign is cohesive. It works across all of our product lines. It blends entertainment, news and sports every part of our network. Big stars, quick cuts, great music, bright graphics. The 90s are coming and they'll be here in only seven short months. This campaign's positioning gives you and CBS an edge. and possibly mockish portion of this week's program Because I can't let this broadcast end without indulging in a moment of reflection Probably more personal than I normally do on this program But I started out in the business as a child actor on the Jack Many Radio program And normally my parents, one or the two of them, would sit upstairs And a little booth right above the control room So that if anything ever went wrong during the broadcast And these were live broadcasts This was the magic of live I could look up there and at least get reassured I was like seven or eight And about the fifth or sixth show that I worked My mother decided she wanted to see the audience's eye view of the show She sat out in the audience instead of upstairs

Which meant that she was visually speaking lost in a sea of about 300-400 people And I figured, hey, I'm eight, I can handle it Coincidentally though, the Jack Many Show introduced its cast members to the studio audience Before the show went on the air And everyone in the cast stood out in the hallway at CBS And waited to hear the voice of Jack Many's announcer Don Wilson introduced them And then you would walk into the studio and acknowledge your applause and take a seat And I was standing out in the corridor chatting with my elders And suddenly I thought I heard Don Wilson yelling out, Harry, Harry! And I opened the door to the studio and ran out on stage And I got the biggest laugh I've ever gotten in my career Because Don Wilson was introducing Mary Livingston and had been yelling Mary! Mary!

At moments like that you realize that you go into comedy so that people will laugh at you only when you want them to And the person that I sat down next to who reassured me enough that I was able to continue On the program that night, gave me the strength, so to speak, was Mel Blank, who died this week My thanks to Jim, Dan, and Chuck For helping in the preparation of this week's age
