Time Out for Jazz; Benny Carter

. . . . . Good evening. This is Charlie Plank asking you to stop whatever you're doing and join me and let's take time out for jazz. Tonight's program is going to feature Benny Carter, one of our great jazz gyms. Bennett Lester Carter, better known as Benny, was born in New York City on August 8th, 1907, and I'm very pleased to say he's still with us in active in music. To say that he is one of the three alto saxophone voices of jazz, which he is, the others being Charlie Parker and Johnny Hodges, is almost like saying Duke Ellington led a band or wrote a song. Benny also is an accomplished performer on tenor sax, trombone, piano, trumpet, and clarinet, not to mention his extreme talent as a composer and an arranger and also as a band leader.

He's even recorded a few vocals. Perhaps these were to show that he did have some weaknesses because no Frank Sinatra was he, or is he? Benny is mainly a self-taught musician and he's worked with such persons as Harris and Fletcher Henderson, Charlie Johnson, Chick Webb, Willie Lewis, the McKinney's Cotton Pickers, the Chocolate Dandies, had his own band, many studio bands, and also many small groups. But words are not going to do it. Let's listen to music. First in his role as an arranger and also as a trumpeter. The first song we'll listen to is The Old Standard by Hogi Carmichael, Star Dust, and this is with the Willie Lewis Orchestra in Paris of 1936. Benny did the arrangement. He leads a sax section and even plays the final trumpet solo on this. Note the rhythm section as it lays out on the third beat in part of this. It's a very interesting tempo and backup for the soloist. Following that is going to be a capital recording of 1944. I surrender dear, the Benny Carter Orchestra of the time.

And this is a trumpet solo for Benny. And then in the small group context, I'm coming Virginia. Again, Benny will play trumpet on this. And he's backed up by Ben Webster, who has an excellent solo, Barney Kessalon guitar, Shelley Mann on drums, and Leroy Vinegar on bass. Let's turn around and listen to some of the Reed work of Benny Carter. The first one is going to be with one of Lionel Hampton's small groups. It's called Shushiners Drag. Jelly Roll Morton 2. This one was arranged by Carter. It has Harry James on trumpet, Hershel Evans and Babe Rosson on Tennessee. Billy Kyle on Peano, Jo Jones on drums, John Kirby bass, and of course Lionel Hampton on vibes.

Carter will play an alto solo following Lionel Hampton's break, Hampton's break, and then Evans, Herschel Evans will have the first tenor solo, then Carter will play Clarenette, and Bay of Bresson will be the final tenor player. After that song, we'll listen to a tune that Benny composed and arranged, and this will be of the Benny Carter band of 1936, and that's a tune nightfall. On this one, Benny will do the Clarenette and tenor sax work on this one. It's interesting that of all the compositions that Benny made or wrote, and many of them are extremely beautiful, the most popular one, he never recorded himself, and that was the old novelty tune, the Cal Cal Boogie. But then, who knows, he made some money out of it, perhaps that was some satisfaction. After nightfall, we'll listen to Waltzing the Blues. This is a London group in 1936,

featuring Jean Rogers on Piana, Bernard Addison on guitar, Wally Morris on bass, and George Ellric on drums. There'll be a Piana introduction to this, then Benny will play tenor, following that to Piano again, then Benny will play alto, and following that guitar, and then Benny will play trumpet. arranger for saxophones. He's done this all through his career, made some beautiful arrangements for great saxophones like Coleman Hawkins earlier on and these were recorded in Europe. But in 1961, many put together an all-star group in this country which featured himself and Phil Woods on alto. Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Rouse on tenor. Dick Katz was on piano John Collins guitar and Jimmy Garrison bass Joe Jones on drums. They even recorded the same solos and so on that they had done and that Hawkins had done in the earlier years. But on this album my favorite track is Quincy Jones song of the Midnight Sun will never set and so that's the one we're going to listen to. And after that many of course was no stranger to recording bands, studio recording bands and there's an all-star group which he led and we're going to listen to the Burke Van Hughes and tune Slayride and July. Benny will be on alto there also. Other soloists on that will be Buddy Colette on tenor and again Barney Kessalon guitar Frank Ross Alino on Trombone and Jerry Wiggins on piano.

Benny, of course, as I mentioned earlier, was is a very multi-talented musician. In

fact, one writer said that if there was ever a musician's decathlon, Benny would certainly be the winner. In the late 30s and early 40s, he had great bands. These might have been too good for the times because they were not commercially very successful, but his music was top-notch. We want to listen to, or at least I want to play, and I hope you want to listen to some of this. And we'll start off with his beautiful theme song, Melancholy Lullaby. On this particular version, Eddie Haywood is on piano and Tyree Glenn on Trombone.
