The dogs many dragons to Indonesia show two or three shot a one left stereo audio channel. Channel 2 right stereo audio channel. Channel 3 time code. There's a place where people still farm with rocks. Where they remember and honor tradition. But now that place is changing industrialize modernize. But how do you change the habits of centuries. Caught between two worlds. That place is Indonesia.
And this is the story of the country trying to join the just real world. Her. Malaysia. Thailand. Indonesia people with a long history of tradition of Islam of Buddhism a history of working the land. And then. Transforming themselves. To become the new Mini dragon. It's. The hottest economies on Earth. But what has this mean for these people for their way of life.
Do you understand Indonesia understand why young the playing of the shadow puppet. In this land of the mysticism. The Puppet Master controls movement and money. Behind a story about the Rotarian rule. Indonesia is us to judge. The world's largest archipelago with the fourth largest population. Almost 200 million. Speaking more than 200 in 50 different languages the
most populous Muslim country in the world with a Chinese minority that controls much of the wealth. Eager to become a regional economic superpower. If. Internal tensions. Don't tear it apart for years. Covered in rain. He's called King of the Far East. Bob one of the most powerful men in the country long time friend of the puppet master. Indonesia's president Suharto in a country where such connections are honored. Bob the son to work Indonesia's largest conglomerates making plywood for construction and wood pulp for paper.
Second only to Brazil Indonesia holds most of the world's remaining rain forest. Obama about his son's success depends on these forests and to protect his success with the forests themselves must be protected at a government research lab reforestation is the top priority. Indonesia is a vast land 3000 miles across from east to west a land rich in resources oil gas timber. And its land of islands. And
thirteen thousand. Spreading across five times. These islands for the 20. Century Indonesia's leaders dream of highways in the sky. Fast efficient air transport built by Indonesia's own aerospace industry. I PTM the Indonesian aircraft industry company is Southeast Asia's biggest maker of their blades. B.J. Habibie is Minister for research and technology. His dreams for his country's future are starting to become reality. In the end you'll. Hear. Many consider how Bibi's plans impossible.
How could a third world country with new technology succeed in the aircraft industry. But he persevered saying this is a chance to leapfrog Indonesia into the 21st century. Itself. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. How Bibi believes that the Indonesian aircraft factory will act as a catalyst for further high tech industry as a way to jumpstart Indonesia's technological growth. But with less than 2 percent of his countrymen holding a college degree how Bibi knows that success demands more education. For now he must nurture a few trained technicians he had. To Rock much. Jihad is one of puppy B's bright young men Rockmart is the first from his diligence ever to go to college to become an engineer.
It is too rotten modern others like him that have Bebe must look. If Indonesia is to continue building up a high tech infrastructure. Bibi's ministry has set up a national exam to find the country's best and brightest engineers. Those who qualify will study abroad for several years in Japan Europe or America with a top aerospace companies in the world. I see some of the oh you technology of our company may be considered an advantage. But only with the Internet. We still need to learn many things from foreign countries. So this examination to study abroad would be the chance of a lifetime for me. If only I can pass it. Today. About one third of Indonesia's people live in cities the
capital Jakarta is bursting at the seams. With President Suharto's insistence on political stability business and industry are booming. But the nation's infrastructure is badly strained from the rapid growth. And the boom his raise new pressures on the family values and revived old regional and ethnic anger. Almost everyone in this country is called pribumi and is a Muslim and colonial days. The local pribumi meant peasants workers civil servants the merchants and businessmen who were Chinese. Today the Chinese are less than 5 percent of the population still control over two thirds of the country's economy. Friend SUA Thomas So a son of one of the few successful pribumi
businessman. His father sent him to America to study business. Now he's back to work in the family business called the bumi group. Young comedian and I. But a bit and I feel we cannot let the economic gap between the Chinese and pribumi grow any larger. The Chinese are good businessmen no doubt about that more than one of you but they only make up a small part of the population now is the time for us will make up the huge majority to break into the world of business. And if we can get involved and I think we've got to make the economy really take off in the knees and. Indonesia. The fabled spice. For three centuries the Dutch colonial master has drained away the wealth of the country shipping everything from oil and rubber to cough the impact. Back
home to your home. To help grow the economy of the island. The Dutch brought in thousands of Chinese. The Chinese. Rich. But the local pribumi remain trapped in poverty and. Of why. It took the Japanese occupation of World War Two to break a centuries old pattern of gloom you see. At the end of the war. Indonesia one it's a. The late president Sukarno a flamboyant and charismatic nationalist had campaigned to free his country from the Dutch. But 20 years of his misrule left the economy and the nation in shambles a leftist coup attempt nearly succeeded in 1965. But a young general called Suharto crushed the rebels and took out
the Chinese minority became scapegoats in the aftermath of the coup. Racial and religious differences few bloody riots and over half of the people it was the government close Chinese schools banned Chinese publications and encouraged Chinese to adopt in the US. Today the government tries to preserve a delicate balance between Chinese and pribumi. And though many ethnic Chinese no longer speak Chinese or acknowledge their heritage memories of the riots remain. The antagonisms are just behind a screen hidden in the shadows.
Bob Hassan one of Indonesia's richest man lives in Jakarta. He is of Chinese descent but he doesn't consider himself Chinese just Indonesian to live in the east. While the number of Chinese in Indonesia is not very large but the Chinese have a grip on the economy I feel it is very important for the strong to assist the weak. Otherwise we won't be able to narrow the gap between rich and poor or us off the ethnic conflicts. These are the most important issues. After abandoning his Chinese name a son converted to Islam and married a pribumi woman a son like most ethnic Chinese has embraced Islam. Oh you're. You're.
Seven hundred miles from his home in the city of Jakarta I am friends one has flown to soothe away Z-R and to return to his native try to tour Russia or when Francoise was just two years old. His father left soon the ways the island with his family choosing the sophistication of the city and the life of an entrepreneur. Now they're back to help make funeral arrangements for friends was great uncle the former chief. Like so many in Indonesia the two Russia have held strongly to their customs. The funeral will be a grand ceremony attended by thousands of the tribe as is the custom. The body is buried with a hood and representing the deceased a guardian
of the grave. This entire village has been built just for the few months after the old chief is buried. It will all people although his family no longer lives here friends was father is still an important elder of the tribe. His business success is much admired and the tribal leaders have asked him to make a speech in honor of the occasion. That we have had is that a wonderful tradition from our forefathers. We must continue to guard it with care. And so these children are and how to keep them alive. Arthur Rodger language I pretty know even if you leave you will keep in your hearts the good of this place and pass it on to your children.
Friends what is typical of a new generation of people educated sophisticated modern. I mean each time I return to the target tripe I feel as though I can hear the voices of my ancestors. I want to work hard to be successful and to share my success helping my fellow Indonesian. I feel that I have a mission to help the thought I get right now and to give the poor people of my country a chance. Francoise father owns a hotel on the island and almost everyone who works here is a member of the tour Russia tried one of the first to benefit from Indonesia's rapid growth. His father did not forget his roots.
Yeah so it's very good for after I get over that you know. I would run for it from here. It means we can accommodate more and more I'm Francoise father will soon retire from the family business. Friends who knows it will not be easy to take his place. Some 55 million people live in the cities. And most come each day drawn by the promise of jobs. Yet many still live without running water or electricity. Indonesia has to find a way to raise the basic standard of living of all its people. That means education and continued economic and technological growth. Indonesia's growth will depend on young engineers like Rockmart jihad.
Going abroad to study is a chance to help his country as well as himself. But Rockmart would have to leave his wife and two young children for as long as three years cart between the needs of his country and his family. Rockmart and his wife face a difficult choice. There is a lot of it. And I'm going to go. You know the bunkers. Oh yes. I'm going to do all of that a month or so and they bring. That out and I love that very thing. You know. With. The other doctor. Bigger than that. Yes. Incidentally going away to study to bring the world's knowledge back home is not uncommon in Asia and Rockmart knows how desperately Indonesia
need scientists and engineers cannot be out of yearning among so that the votes are there to do. It. That was. Good to talk about but I was. OK. But what I think. Rockmart the third of 10 children comes from a poor village. His family sold boutique in fish to pay for his schooling when he became an engineer. His success was the village's triumph a symbol of how the future could be deduced as I mean within the religion where I grew up. And if you had electricity or running water it was us. There were no telephones. I didn't get up because their parents had no money. Even smart children were unable to go to high school or even grade school.
When you know they don't know. Now I can do something for the poor people of my country. But I do Philip in our technology. Beginning to take off. It was a first. He was vice president when President Suharto to his country. Took power in 68. Supported by the technocrats.
Chinese business leaders. Still active in the country's political and business affairs in partnership with the army. And Economic Opportunity to the country. Here is where Indonesia's global ambitions began. In Suharto's vision. Indonesia is a natural leader of the Third World. He summoned the minister hobby to plan for the upcoming summit of nonaligned nations. A masterful politician Suharto was slated to be elected chairman today. The two must decide how best to display Indonesia's technological prowess. There's even though you have renewed.
Interest in this supply side because you got the order by the way but you've got to put up something that I'm not you know about that will be the guy that wants it but I think it's something I know about. But that. Island lies next to the exotic tourist resort. Tourism doubled in the past few years. It now brings in more than 10 percent of the country's foreign exchange. The government has plans to make Lombok the world's newest tropical playground. Seeing opportunity in the blue skies and unspoiled beaches Francoise has come hoping to buy land to build his own resort hotel. His local agent has already warned him the search may not be easy.
A majority of the people here are an Muslim. Their customs are different from the foreign tourists. They aren't used to seeing naked many upset by others on the beach. Let me see. What the brain. In a moment and then you can see right. After the new. Exploding tourist development. No matter how it may harm traditional communities has made local people weary. Did he mean. If you knew.
Me. He knew. At one time this island was ruled by the Hindu kingdom of Bali. The local people are a mix of Moslem and him. With Lombok Sunni customs and proximity to Bali. The government in Chinese capital is already flowing into tourist development. Some of the locals hope the foreigners will savor more than just the scene but they missed their customers from afar. They're not allowed on hotel premises. You're right.
Oh yeah and what that's the sign saying it's the Lombok tourist development company is planning to be a big resort here. It's a joint venture between the local government off Long Island and Raj I want to go. To. One of President Suharto sons. He's one of the top people there. By putting these sign up they can shut out the developer s because they're planning to build a high class at the National Resort like the one you find in Bali. The government's plan to develop tourism on Lombok spurred a rash of land
speculation not only involving the Chinese conglomerates but also the powerful Suharto family ICO has heard that residents have been harassed into giving up their homes. They made one. Again. If you want my personal opinion I don't want them to be any more or tell us lies that the fishermen one have a place to work. And they won't have anywhere to move. You on this beach. The local people would no longer be
able to bathe here. It would become the property but when I built my hotel I wanted to benefit the local people and give them work. But I'm worried that the foreigners will destroy our island sculpture. But when I built my hotel the people will sell us their produce under seafood. They will make some money and our children can go to school so they can benefit to. The runway. Thank at Indonesian aircraft company work on the prototype of a new island hopping passenger aircraft has hit a snag. Rockmart is one of a team that Mr. Harvey B has assembled to try and get things back on track. But foreign consultants are still needed. For Rockmart. It's another
reminder of how badly his country needs to expand its own technological base. The. Competition for the exam is going to be intense Rockmart studies for hours every night even after a full day's work at the factory. Indonesia's natural resources are fueling the country's growth. Wood Products account for nearly 4 billion dollars a year in export sales. His son has vast holdings here. He plans to turn trees into plywood for sale to Japan. But Japan standards are very strict. It won't be easy. His son knows that most profit lies and value added products. Plywood rather than rock
timber. Eight years ago he convinced the government to stop exporting raw timber. Plywood exports took off. Help to Buy abundant cheap labor. Thanks to his son's efforts. Indonesia is now one of the largest plywood exporters in the world. It. Was. With. Was. Determined to pass the Japanese quality standard. The sun has selected Mills with the best facilities from around the country. If Japan accepts equality then plywood exports will soar. But.
There's a problem. The West has focused increasingly on environmental issues especially about rain forests and Indonesia's plywood industry has come under attack. To counter bad publicity the government hosted a conference in Jakarta. Western journalists came to confront the forestry industry represented by a sign actually with all of these problems with all these shortcomings. I think we are much better than the other companies. Look at the United States. If you go to the Midwest you could Australia right from Sydney to Melbourne. What do you see not the case. The Levis all. It's like on the planet Mars. It is also part of the criticism that you read in the press. Is. That there's not enough free time to compare to what is being cut.
Immigration scientists I think the old reports including the World Resources Institute have never been in the forest. Visitor nation scientists nor. Some of the witness a radical b.s.. I guarantee you. Which one has been to all Indonesian forests. I'm every day doing things in the forests I've never been to all the forest. It's so big and so huge. We thought that with nothing. This government started building this country in 1970 actually. The most important is we employ 2 and a half million people directly. So. I think we have to think about our stomach. How to help our brothers and sisters who are still living under the law. That's the. Problem. These countries must find a way to balance their
people hungry for economic growth. Against the long term imperative of environmental protection. The West says that the rain forests are the lungs of the earth. And must be preserved. But the people of the Third World ask why it is their responsibility. What about their development. Their standard of living. This is argue the heart of the dispute between developed and developing nations. Bob Hassan first met President Suharto when Suharto was still a troop commander back then Army officers often worked hand in glove with the Chinese in their business ventures. The side of the letter. I was able to come this far thanks to my military friends. I lived locked from the now deceased hero done by the army. And from general so hard to know the president.
I feel. That my present philosophy is based on the ideas of those people. Who assisted me. And helped me to mature. Friends while most form similar alliances. Yet. After returning empty handed from Lombok Island he complained to his father about the problems pribumi business men face when they try to compete with the Chinese. His father counselled him. Don't be angry but learn from the Chinese. You know I was one of them. Tonight friend SWA is taking his father's advice. Business success means joining together with like minded colleagues in
Indonesia. These alliances are formed early often in college. Friends while his friends are planning a new business group sharing expertise and capital tonight. Friends why has an unusual proposal. For over three hundred fifty years. We were ruled by the Dutch. That was when the Chinese came over to start a business. The Chinese used that to their advantage. I succeeded. Why do you think so many Chinese got preferential treatment from the government. Because they knew how to do business. Even if you fire the Chinese on the same ground we have no chance of winning the airfare flipping market capital and technology. Together today so that we can form a new business group. But do you think
it's really possible to form a group with just. I think you know I think it would be better to include the Chinese. What do you think we can do that is fine with me. I am against it even if we did we wouldn't be able to free ourselves from them since we have to be the winners in the end. And what about our time passes and we just remain customers. Like many young pribumi entrepreneur his friends one knows he has no choice but to develop pribumi Chinese alliances. Son is now launching a new venture one he hopes will bring international sports attention to his country.
It is the richest marathon race in the world has become an event people refer to as the Bob 10k. Anything like them. I have a question for you Mr. Haasan. How will this stand kilometer race affect our Indonesian runners. When I started putting these races the fastest you know record 36 minutes it's 30 minutes. I think the race has helped a lot. The quality of our run there. Are a great Buddhist temple built on the island of Java almost a thousand years ago. Bob place the finish line at its base.
It's an affected piece of marketing sports writers and media attracted by the race will also be helping promote Indonesia's tourist industry. To attract the world's best marathon runners and build international public bop a song he's agreed to personally pay the winner one million dollars. If a world record just broke. My thumb and put my name well my friends and I have organized a business group and we've been thinking you know
how we put in fight you get to join. We need some Chinese businessmen in our group. What do you think. When I go. Yeah yeah. I'm like oh you're busy. Yeah yeah. Friends while flies to Lombok again. Determined to find a hotel site but there are so many obstacles. With interest rates now at 30
percent. The Chinese conglomerates flush with capital have a considerable advantage. And is so hard to family also has a strong business presence here. But eco has found two landowners who seem willing to make a deal. She's told them Francoise will treat them fairly. Yeah. Yeah yeah. I. Know. Yeah. Never mind. All right but I'm going on my way here and. I don't know how to get your mind up why do we have but yeah yeah. That is my thought on me. But I've never been on a bike without approval.
And. That. That in fact I'd even Yeah. I bet if I'm bad I'm going to be you're right. You say them up and we'll be satisfied with that. Yeah but you know what I think of him and I LOOK A Yeah yeah. Dan. It's an unspoiled island with immense hidden potential. I think the number of tourists will continue to increase. If I build a hotel I could provide many jobs and the local people would be able to make money selling souvenirs to the foreigners and I get. The big bang and I don't book I have made up my mind to make the hotel that I build here will serve the local people. We will find a way to sign it and how do you know that we are not drawing the natural beauty
of the native culture here. The mines and the data. At Indonesian aircraft company rock Marts day of reckoning has finally come. Minister Habib has arranged for examinations to be held in government ministries and state owned companies across a nation of twelve hundred engineers and scientists who are competing for the chance to study overseas. Only a hundred fifty will be selected after weeks of uncertainty Rockmart will soon discover in which direction his future is headed. But.
I do think that it is I think a lot about what would be. I don't like. Thinking about my. Dad up and running to Bill and the ones they. Might get to from me next time as well and I think. You know it and I d to bring it to you when you're most Gowdy the guy you go to.
The exit. Yeah. But if. That's. The State. So that I might. Sink that. Rabbit that I was just about the it the body so yeah yeah yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah I say the sadness I get it. For what it called. Back yeah yeah yeah yeah I guess I'm back. After closing the deal on the hotel site friends why has gathered his staff at the
bumi group. He's told them the new mom bought Prince hotel will be their top priority at having succeeded in finding land they can at last begin transforming his dream into a reality. It will be here with the mind of the ladies and gentleman may I present the long book Prince Hotel. This is the main lobby here will have movie theaters and here are the cottages and the dock. You can take a boat to the two islands. So now we can just sit back and let the hotel build itself. The next. Friend Swallow has other challenges ahead. He's come to Jakarta's China Town
for a meeting with Hans a Chinese businessman who may be interested in joining the new business group. For five generations family have run hotels and furniture factories in Indonesia. Like Francoise. He grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. I've been out of camp you. Get several business friends and I have started a new business group. But at the moment everybody is a pribumi. We have no Chinese businessman but I. Am. Always in Chinese or both Indonesian. I don't mind doing business with pribumi to make money. That's about the money. If you really feel that way you should join our group. So let me get that. Well I'll think about it. Yeah but you know.
I didn't think you meant opened up with a memo. Well I think it's time pribumi and Chinese try to stop fighting and start to work together. But before we go on I want to get the group consensus people shall we go ahead and try to work together. Chinese. Well that's one way to fight the advantage. Who knows we might even become successful in that. In any case we have to start somewhere. I just hope the worklist Brant and our group gets bigger and you get people to talk scholarly. I'm ready to give it a try. But as a first step we should start with something small then as we get to know each other better. We can set our sights on something bigger.
The day of the Bob his son 10K has a ride and the media are here from across the region. Even a TV crew from America attracted by the idea of the world's richest run. For his son. It's another chance to build Indonesia's profile in the world. Yeah yeah. Yeah. Yeah yeah. In the a.m. No one breaks the world record but still there's plenty to celebrate. The Iran was a great success. I'm OK.
Now there's another cause for celebration. As president of the Indonesian plywood Association. Bob Hassan is hosting a dinner attended by many of his country's most influential business leaders. He's recently heard from Tokyo. And the news means big profits for Bob has signed big profits for his country. Can I have your attention please. Let me introduce you to Mr.. REPRESENTATIVE OF THE NATION Association's Japan office. And I'm proud to say 12 of our factories have passed the Japanese forestry standards and now we can hope that more Japanese will buy our bio in the future.
The Summit of the movement of nonaligned nations is held in Jakarta as expected delegates have elected President Suharto Chairman. Minister Habib plays host of Indonesian aircraft coming. Here. With delegates impressed by their tour. President Suharto is one step closer to his goal of making Indonesia a technological leader of the Third World. And the bright young man who was keep his dream growing are on their way out into the world. We on the.
USCIS have an idea. Of A. Place In The USA would only just so much. Yes. Some of them. Now they're. Going to look as. If I was in. The Middle. This Im going to do with this if. You. Never. Did. I don't. Have It I have it. Right. Here. Right. Here. That puts us a. Winning it. And like my younger boy doesn't walk e n a day. My older daughter the dust and again to go out
now is the time my family needs my love the most. And yet I'm about to leave for Japan. Just you know what my country needs me to. Do to make up for the sacrifice I'm forcing on my family and I'm going to study a fairly hard. Some day my children will understand. And that abandons. Goodbye. Has you in three years time. In didn't. Land of more than 13000 islands. Some 200 million people a stew of dialects and cultures.
Indonesia is a giant steering gradually waking up stepping outside the shadows stepping out from behind the screen. Willing and eager to take its place as an economic power in the world. It is a nation with immense ambition immense resources and immense potential. But its internal tensions can still hold it back. But that being at the science about the bones of removing. What the Chinese can do that we presume is surely can do and make it happen. I'm tired of all these conflicts. Listening Why can't we become good drivers and with friends on what happened and. You don't have to be yet. Because I'm going to work hard to close the gap. Between the two.
Sold together but I think we can both enjoy the fruits of our labor. As you know in this great country Indonesia. But if the people that have been in the U.S.. To order a video cassette of many dragons to call 1 800 3 4 5
