Many dragons to Thailand show two or two audio channel one love stereo audio channel audio channel to write stereo audio channel audio channel 3 time code. So. In Buddhism serenity and harmony are virtues. OK but what happens when a country of Buddhists industrialize where they lose that Serenity lose their harmony. This is the story of a country called Thailand. Yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah. Malaysia. Thailand. Indonesia people with a long history of tradition of business will visit a history of working the land. And then. Transforming themselves. To become the new. Minidress. The hottest economies on Earth. But what has this mean for these people. For their way of life. In Thailand there's an expression my pen. It
means Don't worry. It doesn't matter. If you say my pen rather. You stay calm in the world's worst trouble. If you say my pen right. You tolerate prostitution being a national industry. As a part of life. Poverty amid growing wealth a fact of life. And you cope with years of military rule. But last May. The Thais stop saying my pen right. What started as a peaceful demonstration about the future of Thailand's democracy ended in a bloody massacre. On the streets of Bangkok. Thank. You. Thailand's king ordered an end to the fighting and brought the leaders to their knees. Nowhere in the world will you find as much respect for royalty and for its traditions.
But everything else in Thailand is changing and it's changing fast in this country with one of the fastest growing economies on Earth. Now Thailand stands on the threshold of becoming the region's newest mini tree. Soup blog Tom Boyd is thirty six single. And a millionaire. In just 10 years. She and her family have built an empire shopping mall. Capitalizing embankments new bridge. But now she faces unexpected challenges. Luck is executive director of the mall good Thailand's second largest
retail chain. She and her family have created all this and six others just like. In the past only worry was their competition might be a bigger department store. But now with politics and the economy a bit uncertain. We are worried that we're growing too fast that we might need to scale back. Or risk losing a lot of money. The question now for simple luck. Will further political unrest jeopardize her plans for future expansion. Bangkok is Thailand's business and political capital. A city of seven and a half million people and still. A city in danger of being suffocated by its own success. Going to take a bite of the mold and I will get it but I don't I
go oh come on you're going to. Make it up. There. Etc.. Well the captain grew up a rumor is governor of this chaotic city. He's in charge of health education welfare and transport like all are under resourced overstretched and under pressure. Yet in Bangkok traffic crawls at less than five miles an hour. The city has less than half the roads it needs and every day new wealth adds 500 more cars to the traffic. And that the matter when I get here right. One more day of. Griselda's daily dose of traffic gridlock is just one of the many
problems he has to solve problems car. By Thailand's rapid economic growth. But only 14 percent of the population lives in this huge modern city of skyscrapers. Most Thais still live in world traditional villages largely untouched by the economic boom. And been going through and. I think I am only a woman because I don't have an education. I have nothing. It seems I have no choice. I think it is our fit because we haven't done enough good in our previous life. It's not unusual for Thais to talk about fate this way. Power and money in MA have little except their Buddhist faith and these calendar
pictures of their beloved king and queen to go. They can only hope and dream they dream of a better life for their son who is two of whom choose parents may be laborers. But they're determined their son will be part of Thailand's rising middle class. My parents are working hard finding money to help me study when I grow up. I want to become a teacher and pay them back for all they are doing for me. To school and books uniform is expensive and soon the youngest son in Iraq will be ready for school. But pined money can't find work that pays enough in the village or on any nearby farms and they don't own any land themselves. They decided they must go to Bangkok. The children will stay with a grandfather. But. I'm going to.
Look. For you if you buy enough to. Get over you. Thank like so many before them my me and Paul are off to make their fortune in the Big City Iowa. Yeah. I would. For over 30 years this is been one of the most popular songs in Thailand
but with little effect. People from the countryside are still coming more and more every day. They'll take the hard and dirty jobs. Young girls often lured to the infamous massage parlors. Like most dream of returning home someday when they've saved enough money. But in the meantime Bangkok is their new home a city many see as a symptom of all Thailand's current ills. Proper job code a GTO abbot of a forest temple in the country's northeast. He's an outspoken critic of the country's development strategy and the role of the military. And as he tells his lawyer he has become a target of attack. His life in danger for fighting a government policy and look what happened. And one man that has I mean like made him a
regular high powered robot OH MY GOD NO NO NO NO NO NO NOT YET but my lawyer. You don't normally look anybody get a good night. I did not in my line. I mean you know I don't have a feeling that. This. Is just one of a new group of activists mind at the forefront of the growing debate over the cost of time and economic success. And I would come out and cry. Yes exactly. I became a monk so I could study the Dharma Buddhist teachings and teachings about nature. Our well-being depends on the four elements earth like Water
Wind and Fire. And this includes the mountains and the forest. Neither humans or animals can survive without this resources. That's why it's my duty to protect the forests. Every day it's months collect food. It's an ancient ritual. Ties no matter how poor. Will always feed the monks. It's a way of accumulating good deeds and good deeds guarantee a higher place in the next life. There are two things close to the heart of every time. The royal family and Buddhist Buddhism is the state religion of Thailand. And this affords some measure of protection as he fights to
moderate Thailand's headlong rush to develop. Thailand is the size of Texas with a population of 58 million. Bangkok has always been the commercial center thanks largely to Chinese immigrants who came here in the early 1900s. Most of their descendants are in business like soup of Oxfam. I think the Chinese people by bloodline all the hard work of the nation not one to let an opportunity go to waste. Simple luck has turned Chinese New Year into a promotion for him. Super Bowl lock is hosting the traditional New Year's dinner for her family. Her penthouse apartment is on top of her biggest mall. Super lot's family has been well integrated into Thai society for generations
through intermarriage and the adoption of the Chinese have made themselves almost invisible. And the dominance of Chinese in business is not a source of conflict here as it is in Malaysia or Indonesia. Business in Thailand is mostly family business because of the Chinese My family gave me this opportunity. At school I was very shy. But when I went to America to study I became more confident. I work hard so that my father who started all business will be proud of me. Super luxe father is the patriarch of the family company. Both sons and daughters are top executives. A high percentage of top business people in Thailand are women among the highest in the world. So it wasn't always like this for women. Just 10 years ago women were compared to the hind leg of an elephant. Unimportant.
But now. So education there's a new generation with new ideas. And it's that generation the prosperous middle class professionals caters to with her family shopping empire. And these are no ordinary moms. They're entertainment centers. These are all luxuries Thais can afford for the first time. All the words of the 80s economic boom. From our vantage point high above. It's entrepreneurs like simple luck who saw the market and made the most of it. But how much longer Kemah country sustain this phenomenal rate of growth. On the other side of Bangkok is the reason for their success. Inside
all these containers exports like tapioca Rice computer chips textiles. Shipped Out to the markets of the world. Propelling Thailand's explosive growth and drawing poor rural migrants into the city. And money have found work here on the docks loading and unloading cargo containers. Tell me I have never worked this hard before but I have to for my son when he says please help me finish my school at least find money so I can study. When did Duncan K.. My life has always been difficult. And so I must be a very strong. I work hard so will be able to finish school. They're earning three hundred fifty baht a day between them. That's not quite
12 American dollars not much compared to super lucky but almost 10 times the wage they'd be earning in a rural area. This is. A. Squatter housing. And prong. You smell like a living and. It will keep you sleeping because of the drinker. When they fry sometimes they sniff
or drink whiskey. The booming export economy has widened the gap between rich and poor. Now when arguments raging as to whether Thailand is really better off. Now you see in Bangkok is not a nice place. It is terribly hot. People have to stay in air conditioning when they leave their room they have to cover their noses from all the pollution they run through their air conditioned car.
Who can believe like that is talking in a local village. He's trying to rally people behind his mission to save a way of life. I have lived in the forests for many years. It is peaceful and we can live independently. We don't need a lot of technology. I know this is controversial and that we are in the way of those who are greedy and selfish but those people cannot truly love our country. Together we must fight them. From his temple mount patrols to stop illegal timber cutting. Armed off duty soldiers protect the loggers once proper juggling shoes they'll get back to the business of cutting down trees in plain decades.
Thailand has lost half its forests and although logging has been banned for four years there's still no shortage of timber in the furniture factories. Some of it comes from neighboring countries like Burma but much still comes from Thailand's own forests. In a symbolic act. Is declaring the spirit of a tree sacred respect for Buddhism is so strong that this ceremony makes a tree safe from even the most unscrupulous loggers. To cut this sacred tree now would be like killing a mom. The grave a sin in the. Dark will bear the sawmill owners are rich. The truth is that the people with money have the law behind them to destroy the forests and the
truth of Buddhist teachings is that without a forest we will all be in trouble. Bangkok's Governor Gray said Death knows he and his city are already in trouble in the boom years growth went unregulated. Everyone just sat in my van right. Don't worry me and are going to go to the piece with me. Al Gore thread is one of the best in the world but really developed so fast we didn't have enough qualified people to direct out growth. Now we have many problems traffic overcrowding a lack of services in Bangkok. It takes up to two years to get a phone line installed. Over a million people around the waiting list each day. This city generates 100 times more garbage bank can be collected. Factory emissions go unchecked adding to an air pollution problem that's one of the worst in the world.
I see. The air pollution is a direct result of the traffic congestion. If you solve the traffic problem you automatically solve the problem. That's the reason I chose traffic as the number one problem and traffic is the number one problem in the heart of every Bangkok resident now. Somehow that must overcome corruption beat bureaucracy and hope. Bangkok citizens keep saying until we can come up with some solutions. This is a meeting of Griselda's party members. Brazil is here trying to win support for a proposal to solve the gridlock. He knows it's not a popular solution but he also knows there are a few choices. We must encourage use of public transport. It must be done quickly. I have started with the idea of new luxury bus routes to replace the car with private transport. We can stop them from entering. Then you have difficulty in the traffic but
further research is still required to coordinate with the idea of creating through traffic. Saddam has another proposal to use the city's canals for public transport. But right now the canals are polluted. Open sewers. Prisoners from the jails are brought each day to dredge the canals buying time for Griselda until they can come up with a permanent solution. Councils in Congo and we have to promote traveling by boat as the ones we have had some success with one canal and they have been firing a whole lot of them. I'm hoping that when our Western treatment is complete them that the canal would be clean and water trust a peer group has the hardest job in Bangkok at stake the city's future as a commercial and political
center. The metallic. Logo. None of them all good. So we're going to keep on going home for soca superblock is planning the simultaneous open to Thailand's largest mall. It's a family's biggest project. Today. They. Have. A. Simple Lux father is teaching her how to get things done in a city where money and the right contacts are vital. Dolphins will. Kill. You and your. House at night.
We. Could. Have. Been. My father always has his mind on business and he was always pushing me. Really I work so hard because of my father. Even in my city I end up thinking about work. Supa lugs main worries now are about the economy and politics. Her concerns have letter back to yet another meeting with their architects about the scale of the new malls. OK we got him. Back with you by my side. Making business decisions when I can control all the variables
and the economy. Well I worry about all the time. The. Superblock is also nervous about today's mall promotion. The special guest is a member of the royal family. Everything must be just right. The children are competing in a lip sinking contest. First prize is a trip to Disneyland U.S.A.. In Thailand any connection with royalty even minor royalty one has the right connections and influence. Respected and the institution of the monarchy for hundreds of years. So
usually in business or in government we feel very proud if we can have some part of the royal family involved. The but yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. With. The land. Thailand's monarch King. Holds no constitutional power.
But a combination of personality and the godlike reverence in which he is held gives him enormous influence. As does the law. You can go to jail for criticizing members of the royal family. Thailand counts on the monarchy to provide stability especially since the military controlled government has had a coup about every three years. The majority of Thailand's Prime Ministers have been military officers. But last minute. People challenge the military's power. For days. A new generation of better educated middle class Thais put their lives on. They were protesting the appointment of a non-elected general as prime minister. Their leader was an activist named John Long. John Long was there when the king brokered a truce to end the fighting. And he's here today. With. Saddam.
Inspired by John Long Griselda has joined in the fight for a government free of corruption. There at this factory campaigning for the workers supported citywide elections. Long Journey Home. Asked me to join him. I decided to say yes. I trust this man. Is doing something I have always wanted to do. To fight for a particle party with no water buying no corruption. In my culture and before that a became a politician. He was an architect. He designed many of Bangkok's finest buildings. Now with children run the Old Firm but in a city renowned for corruption checks in to be sure everything stays strictly above board. This we got and I. Didn't mean to be nice. That's what I. Taught. Them for the work
for me been at it that some of them over. Night are not people but it has been practicing architects for some 30 years before I was governor. I came to know a lot of investors with clout in this and how they know the way I work because there's no funny business. So I'm confident they will come in with us to help solve our problems. In the boom years nobody was watching out for bankers. Now granted it is he has a vision for the city's future and he's going to ask developers who grew rich in the boom to pay for it. Super lucky is busy planning for her new malls. Her big gamble on the country's continuing prosperity. But simple OKas more than malls at stake. She's also a major shareholder in this giant industrial estate on the outskirts of Baghdad.
But you know. I'm. Not. Going to set out. The plan for telling a dusty old par three story was watched under the concept of managed by professionals for professionals. Thailand is rich in natural resources including. That we culturally produce. Industrial Materials. Energy sources. Manual. Labor. Child labor is followed by sheep and about. The chance to exploit that resource of $5 a day labor has already lured 230 factories Dabangg Kong and lower 700 new factories to Thailand every year. This
foreign investment is the engine of the Thai economy. Every day a new Japanese factory opens Degen the big airconditioning farm has just set up on superblocks a state like others. They've been attracted not just by the cheap labor but by the host of tax and other incentives on offer incentives which encourage them to import technology and even allow them to bring in management from Japan. Alone among Southeast Asian countries Thailand was never colonized. Many fear it is being so now for short term economic gains. At Dyken even though ordering an accounting are done via satellite hookup with head office in Japan. But Thailand has plans for its own future a high tech future
and education is the key. A. Little. The. Thais are taught early the pillars are countries built on bread for the land white for religion and blue for the tree. Education is becoming the fourth pillar. The government has extended compulsory education so that all ties with now complete the sixth grade they were encouraged to go further. Thailand's development depends on a future of highly skilled workers. Whose parents want their son to be a part of that future.
I am only working until I switch over. It's a hand-to-mouth existence but I'm doing this for my children. Money and power never got past fourth grade. That's why it's so important to them that their sons have the best education possible. They're willing to live here in Cologne toy separated from home and family to guarantee a better future for their children. Why don't you have. The time. You're right that is what I got mad that you can now go. Down. On. Your.
But there's a growing danger facing pod mommy son and everyone in Thailand especially the poor in Kong toy. The recent death of six babies born with AIDS has motivated Manny to attend a class organized by the dong Pradeep Association an independent welfare group that works in Bangkok slums. And. Milan. Oh my God. And. Each time I was mighty. Name and. My Queen Mary. I made my time in Thailand. It's traditional for men married and single to visit prostitutes. The health ministry says 50000 women have already caught AIDS from their husbands.
Thailand's sex industry is famous part of the tourist package. The country has almost a million prostitutes. And by some estimates will soon have almost 4 million cases of AIDS. In a few years. AIDS could cost Thailand more than it now spends on defense and education combined. To prep a job aides is just another sign of a society that's lost its way around you. Everything costs money in this money. We must learn to be content. You can learn of this I guarantee you. You keep your boyfriend or your husband may be wondering risky smoke or play around. He will love and be faithful to you. Do you understand. I worry about all your family.
These villages are nearly all tapioca foreigners. After Rice tapioca is Thailand's second biggest rural export earner. The government built the industry by encouraging landless peasants just sad Lynn Forester to clear them and plant the cash crop. Now there's a glut of tapioca and change priorities. The government says villagers can't live in Old Forest because they're going to use them as watersheds. The military is in charge of me settling the peasants. Meanwhile the land that was conveniently cleared for the tapioca eucalyptus trees are now grown by big business for export to Japanese pulp mills. The land and
regular income of the tapioca farmers is under threat. The native forest. Gone. Proper Jack and his fellow monks are at the head of a grassroots movement questioning these government policies. I have turned to conservation without asking anyone for permission. I see it as my duty. The government doesn't understand how important the forest is to our culture. In Buddhism the forest is the spiritual. Even Buddha himself urged his disciple to live and meditate in the forest. It is now believed that the government's next step is to forbid the monks from living in the forest. A long tradition will be lost. Culture and religion will be the poorer for it. Before he was among the debt collector for Chinese gamblers
he became a monk after Id once been shot with a streetwise nose for corruption and his monastic authority. He's a formidable opponent and he's awake to what's happening here says they want to arrest this tractor driver for not paying bribes to the military. Jock believes it's just the tip of the iceberg of wider corrupt practices. We. Really. Love. Life. We don't want to be that about money which I don't think we.
Actually Like. But the. Way. That I make all my me from. My own you. Know with proper job is arrested again. We're with you.
Although it means he won't be able to attend a public debate about resettlement in forest conservation. Proper jugs the rest guarantees a packed house. In a highly unusual move. An army general in charge of resettlement and a representative of the royal forestry department have agreed to openly discuss and defend their policies. Do you think that's really good enough sir. Seminars like this are a first for Thailand proper job has inspired a new generation of middle class Thais to question policies they see as unfair. This official helps determine the government's forest policy. What's really important for you to understand is our policy on
forest conservation. We are trying to preserve the forest that is still in good condition. Tyler only has 28 percent of its far is left. We want to have about 40 percent. Dr. Paul Wade is a leading political and environmental activist. But we are not really just talking about forests here. We are talking about people about poor people who are being cleared off the land. In the past 100 years it has always been the poor who have been exploited. They are still being exploited. Their government's policy makes it impossible for them to earn a living in the countryside. But the most important thing is the normal rules and regulations. I am a soldier. It is my job to enforce the law not political philosophy. I know.
The military is not used to explaining itself. Now it's having to do it more and more often. The riots last May were just the most visible symbol of a country that stop saying my Penrod. Never mind. It doesn't matter now it matters. Grisel is here in his official capacity as governor of Bangkok to place the final decorative touch on a new temple. I am very pleased on this great day. It's at in part an occasion for
all who have worked together for so long with such faith this temple has been built on the side of an older one that was too small to contain all its followers in the same way. Grisel prayers are for the building of the new Bangkok. A Bangkok that can accommodate the success of this growing city and the new demands of its people. I want to make Bangkok a first class city. My vision is to have good public transport. Freeway systems and a series of satellite cities by the year 2000. I know we can solve our problems. The prayer of the poor living in clung to him is for lots of money and
another to go home someday. Power and money had saved enough for a visit home to see their children. It's a big day for them. Mani's also heard from her father that there's a possibility of a good paying job in their village. But they're trying not to get their hopes up until they know for sure. Yes. Thank you. From college and
all happy. But it's like trying to win the lottery. I'm not sure it can ever happen. It's been a nine hour journey home for me. Well they're as anxious for news about a job as they are to see their children. Patience is not the Thai way. As friends prepare well the children get their presents. I. Want my parents
to help me. It's. Proper Jack has come to the city to testify in court. Proper jots lawyer is preparing the defense. Oh I did something right. If I could get. It. Right. Nobody. And I am afraid that if development continues this way it won't be long before we have no land no resources. All our resources are being used up by foreigners. Those who are working for the foreigners. Look at me as the
enemy. I stop them from being rude. They don't want to respect or understand the teachings of the Lord. Proper job has been to court many times because of his high profile his cases are a test of Thailand's development strategy. Every time the courts have sentence proper jock to prison and every time they've suspended the sentence unwilling to risk what his supporters might do if proper John is jailed. But one thing the government does know their people will no longer say. My pen ry. And that's exactly what worries to. And why she's hedging her bets as she breaks ground for her new models. So the island's economic growth has been great for our retail business. But now things and we must be more careful. Nowhere in the world
has a little class grown so rapidly as it has here in Southeast Asia. A middle class with growing political and environmental consciousness a middle class that may choose to slow down Thailand's phenomenal growth. So souple luck always a realist has decided that this mall designed to be four stories will now only be three. In a Buddhist ceremony superblocks family prays that this site will be lucky that the economy will continue to grow. That future political turmoil can be avoided by someone. Right now. The middle daunting job but Confound the thing that you don't try to protest
against all development. But everything needs to be developed in a good way. The lines of my own development and growth with more honesty when they can balance each other. You only destroy yourself when you destroy the forests the mountains the streams. Do you understand. God. Eat.
Eat. Eat. Look. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah yeah. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh oh oh. Oh oh oh oh oh I I. Have. To order many dragons to call 1 888 5 8 8 6 7 8 3 video cassettes 479 95 plus 550 shipping and handling. All right many dragons to box 6 8 6 1 6 Indianapolis Indiana 4 6 2 6 8.
And. 6 PBS. Next on many dragons to Indonesia a country of poor farmers now trying to join the industrial age. A people a country caught between two worlds. The government has ambitious plans. But you know and still wrapped in tradition. It's not easy to change the habits of centuries. That's kinda nice use challenge on the next many dragons to. Die. Way.
