"The deserts of northwestern New Mexico, the wooded mountains of Clearwater National Forest in northern Idaho, the salmon-filled waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska, and the snow-capped peaks of Glacier National Park in Montana--all four locations are examples of lands or waters owned and managed by the United States government. Each location also is an example of what has become a major battle over the management of federal lands. "Recent government policies have opened up these lands for oil, mineral and lumber harvesting--a threat to scenic beauty, recreation, wildlife and even some people's livelihoods and homes. "WAR IN THE WEST examines the current controversy over federal land management through personal stories set in these locales."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
