- Program Description
- "Reflections of War traces the development of the only museum in America dedicated to interpreting the Vietnam War. Until this education center opened, no one had dared to take on the challenge of examining a war that so deeply divided the country. Carlton Sherwood, a Pulitzer Prize winner and Peabody Award-winning journalist, hosted the show. Sherwood served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive and is a decorated combat veteran. "Using a variety of footage shot over the course of thirty years, Reflections of War tells many stories. The program starts with first-hand accounts of the Vietnam War. The show then travels to Washington D.C. to document the journey made by 'The Last Patrol.' This group of fourteen veterans marched more than 200 miles from the Capitol to Holmdel, NJ. Their monumental undertaking helped to raise funds for the construction of a New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The final story focuses on the Vietnam Era Educational Center. This museum looks at the impact that the conflict had on the soldiers who fought in Vietnam as well as the national discord the war caused back at home. "The documentary merits Peabody consideration because it has helped to raise awareness of the only museum in the country designed to interpret the Vietnam War. This exceptional place serves as a source of remembrance and healing for the nation. Since its premiere, the documentary has been honored with a Mid-Atlantic Emmy, Central Educational Network (CEN) Award, National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) Award and a Philadelphia Press Association Award."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
