A Closer Look

My idea was to do. Pieces that would go into. Either park settings or near architecture and that people could have done a fire with. And this piece would say look I'm. At home in this surrounding. You should feel at home too. The newspaper reader and the sandwich eater of that kind of response so real so approachable passers by treat them like family. The two Princeton sculptures are the work of Seward Johnson Jr. and they were cast of his Italian Alexander road. I first did this to solve my own problems. And. I've got more people working. I saw that some were learning from others. And all of a sudden the man who was in charge said what we really have here is a school. Johnson The town is the largest are casting training center in the world currently about half of the work cast is of Johnson's own creation. Most of his
work is realistic. Generally life sized figures that actually blend so effectively in their outdoor settings that while most expect them to come alive and. I would like to be able to understand whether whether they understand some of the reasons I had for putting it there. How many people pick that up or are they responding just upfront with this human form. Johnson is a whimsical sort of man he says he gets the most satisfaction from making the small model getting as much of life into it as possible. After that well he says he pretty much his interest. I get fairly bored with the muscles. And they don't really care if they're in the right place as long as the piece conveys a human presence. All the sculpture may lose interest. There are still plenty of work to be done other Italian members take over at this point consulting with Johnson along the way until the piece is finished.
One of Johnson's works in progress is. This model is just one third the size of the actual finished piece to be cast in aluminum. I guess the mystery in that would be what would feel like under the roof. I mean the hole and also the fact that when you have a tooth ache it feels that there are all kinds of sort of identity relationships that become it. Much of Seward Johnson's work is devoted to capturing the ordinary everyday scenes like the sandwich eater and the newspaper reader in downtown Princeton. But one not so ordinary sculpture is located in Washington D.C. It's called the awakening. A huge five piece sculpture of a giant bursting from the earth. Johnson says it has a lot of upfront impact unlike his other work it's something that people can relate to. Oh my God. I dreamed about this once. But
I think the mystery in it is that. And the universal subconscious. Always been working a project like the awakening costs about one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to produce in about two years to complete people whose patience and skill involved is one of the largest art foundries in the world. It is first and foremost a school the center presently has a staff of 20 about 50 students a year in the master apprentice approach which dates from medieval times. Rick Graham a 25 year old apprentice who entered the program. The emphasis places on hands on training. I was really hoping I didn't have any idea what it was supposed to do with.
Instruction in nine areas from moldmaking nation coloration through chemical reaction with the metals. Graham has learned several of the specialties but his major emphasis has been in metal tracing structures. That's the specialty which is the most challenging for an apprentice where the actual casting of the sculpture is done. The work demands concentration judgement timing and the ability to work well with a group. Casting controversy. Gay Liberation sculpture is being cast in bronze at two thousand fifty degrees Fahrenheit. And aside from casting the works of famous artists such as George Georgia O'Keeffe students and staff get a chance to cast their own. That's one of the big things about being here.
That's pretty much the reason a lot of people. I'm doing enough now present the last few months to keep you satisfied. Johnson wants other sculptors to avoid some of the problems he encountered in trying to obtain reliable technical information and his philosophy about the place appears to have had an impact on the apprentices. What I've learned is technical processes mostly. And I've also learned a lot from this gathering of artists. Other than in an art school. You don't have too many artists together like numbers that we have about 70 people here that are making large going into that. Johnson says he never expected the school to become so large but he hopes to expand even further continues to churn out highly skilled and commercially successful artists.
As for Johnson himself. One never knows but I have got so many ideas. I'll take take a while to use up all the ideas and if I don't get a moral then I'll stop. But if I do get some more I'll keep going.
