- "For 20 years, the residents of Newark, New Jersey, have lived with a stigma that has beset that city since the devastating riot of 1967. And though there has, of late, been a surge of redevelopment and economic renewal, the problems that culminated in the civil disorders and the problems that have come since ? are still far from resolution. "What is there to be hopeful about? What remains to be faced? Where were we 20 years ago? How far have we come? Those are the kind of things that Newarkers tend to talk about in twos and threes. But with the COMMUNITY CONVERSATION, New Jersey Network took on the unprecedented job of placing these issues in the kind of public forum that was large and diverse enough to take in all kinds of people, all shades of opinion, from the city's elected leaders to public housing residents. "Recorded at a renovated church-turned-community center in the heart of what had been the riot district, the CONVERSATION brought together people who would otherwise never meet, it gave light to subjects that are too often overlooked, it gave a city a chance to assess itself and its needs, its strengths and its weaknesses, not through the outsider's analysis, but through the insider's candid self examination."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
