Episode Description
"The Bouchard family of Fort Kent introduces us to the struggle of potato farming in the French speaking St. John River Valley of northern Maine. Strong family and cultural ties keep them from giving up, as well as the prospects of a new cottage industry making a buck wheat pancake mix from their heritage called a 'ploye'. The Bouchards are betting that their investments in bringing a piece of Acadian culture to the general public will keep their farm active for generations to come. In a state known for tight-lipped, one-word responses, Harvest of Hope excels at capturing the issues these rugged Acadians deal with on a daily basis, in their own words, without expert analysis or omniscient narrator. The more candid and personal the interviews become, the more the viewers realizes that it is only the spectacular scenery which separates the viewer from the universality of the stories. In a very natural and human way the participants' stories become 'our stories', the series name of which Harvest of Hope is one of four episodes."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
