Description
Program Description
"Chrysler: Once Upon A Time and Now chronicles key [turning] points for the company from Walter P. Chrysler's takeover of the ailing Maxwell-Chalmers auto company in 1923, to Chrysler's current position in the world auto industry under Chairman Lee Iacocca. The program depicts in detail the events and personalities that brought the tenth largest corporation in America to the government's door for financial help. The national debate over government aid for Chrysler culminated in Senate and House hearings in 1979. Testimony in these hearings included intense debate about the [impact] and workability of a Chrysler bankruptcy; the appropriateness of government help to industry in a 'free enterprise' economy; the cost to industry of government regulation of product safety, environmental quality, and [energy] policy; the precedence for government loan guarantees and [more]. The Chrysler Loan Guarantee bill passed the Congress in a compromise version achieved in suppliers, and unprecedented labor concessions. Out of Chrysler's close encounter with extinction emerged the voices of respected government leaders, major corporate executives, financial analysts, and labor leaders calling for national industrial planning, and much closer cooperation of government, industry and labor. Chrysler's story goes well beyond the life of one auto company and is, in the eyes of Michigan Governor James J. Blanchard, 'only the tip of the iceberg...and the entire economic and political establishment to a great degree is ignoring the problem.' Chrysler: Once Upon A Time and Now gave viewers much greater insight into this problem of the strength of American industry, perhaps the central issue for the United States in the 1980s.
