JUDY: GOOD EVENING. I'M JUDY WOODRUFF. ON THE "NEWSHOUR" TONIGHT, THE JANUARY 6TH INVESTIGATION: STATE OFFICIALS TESTIFY ABOUT HOW FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP PRESSURED THEM TO OVERTURN THE RESULTS OF THE 2020 ELECTION. THEN, QUESTIONS ABOUND -- AS NEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT THE UVALDE SCHOOL MASSACRE, THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CASTIGATES LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR ITS SLOW RESPONSE, SAYING IT PUT THE LIVES OF POLICE OFFICERS OVER CHILDREN AND TEACHERS. AND, REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST -- WOMEN DESCRIBE LIFE BEFORE ROE V. WADE AND THE UNCERTAINTIES TH COULD FACE AGAIN IF THE LANDMARK SUPREME COURT DECISION
LEGALIZING ABOION IS OVERTURNED. >> WOMEN'S LIVES WILL BE THWARTED. LESSENED, DIMINISHED. BECAUSE THEIR FREEDOMS ARE DIMINISHED. JUDY: ALL THAT AND MORE ON TONIGHT'S "PBS NEWSHOUR." >> FORR CELLULAR HAS BEEN OFFERING PLANS TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO DO MORE OF WHAT THEY LIKE. OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM CAN HELP YOU FIND A PLAN THAT SUITS YOU. >> AND WITH THE ONGOING SUPPORT OF THESE INDIVIDUALS AND INSTITUTIONS, AND FRIENDS OF THE NEWSHOUR, INCLUDING CAMILLA AND GEORGE SMITH.
>> THIS PROGRAM WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING, AND BY CONTRIBUTIONS TO YOUR LOCAL TV STATION BY VIEWERS LIKE YOU. THANK YOU. JUDY: FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS MONTH, THE CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING THE JANUARY 6 ATTACK ON THE U.S. CAPITOL PRESENTED EVIDENCE OF
THE RELENTLESS EFFORTS BY FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP AND HIS ALLIES TO THROW OUT THE RESULTS OF THE 2020 ELECTION. THE FOCUS OF TODAY'S HEARING WAS THE PRESSURE TRUMP EXERTED ON STATE LEGISLATORS AND STATE AND LOCAL ELECTION OFFICIALS. BECAUSE OF THE FORMER PRESIDENT'S REPEATED LIES, CONGRESSMAN ADAM SCHIFF SAID ELECTION WORKERS FACED THREATS FOR SIMPLY DOING THEIR JOBS. >> PRESIDENT'S LIE WAS, AND IS, A DANGEROUS CANCER ON THE BODY POLITIC. IF YOU CAN CONVINCE AMERICANS THAT THEY CANNOT TRUST THEIR OWN ELECTIONS, THAT ANYTIME THEY LOSE, IT IS SOMEHOW ILLEGITIMATE, THEN WHAT IS LEFT BUT VIOLENCE TO DETERMINE WHO SHOULD GOVERN? JUDY: THOSE THREATS WERE MADE REPEATEDLY OVER THE PHONE, IN PERSON, AND EVEN AT THE HOMES OF THE ECTION WORKERS. THE WITNESSES SHARED STORY AFTER STORY ABOUT HOW THE SUSTAINED INTIMIDATION HAS COMPLETELY UP-ENDED THEIR LIVES. >> AT HOME UP UNTIL RECENTLY, IT
IS THE NEW PATTERN OR A PATTERN IN OUR LIVES TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON SATURDAYS BECAUSE WE HAVE VARIOUS GROUPS COME BY AND THEY HAVE HAD VIDEO PANEL TRUCKS WITH VIDEOS OF ME PROCLAIMING ME A PEDOPHILE AND A PERVERT AND A CORRUPT POLITICIAN. AND BLARING LOUDSPEAKERS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. >> SOME PEOPLE BROKE INTO MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW'S HOME. MY SON HAS PASSED AND SHE'S A WIDOW AND HAS TWO KIDS AND SO WE'RE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HER SAFETY, ALSO. >> I JUST DON'T DO NOTHING ANYMORE. I DON'T WANT TO GO ANYWHERE. I SECOND GUESS EVERYTHING THAT I DO. IT'S AFFECTED MY LIFE IN A MAJOR
WAY. EVERY WAY, ALL BECAUSE OF LIES AND ME DOING MY JOB, THE SAME THING I'VE BEEN DOING FOREVER. JUDY: NEWSHOUR CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT LISA DESJARDINS AND WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT LAURA BARRON-LOPEZ HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE HEARING TODAY. AND THEY JOIN ME NOW. SO MUCH OF TODAY'S TESTIMONY WAS MOVING. LAURA, I WANT TOEGIN WITH YOU. THE WITNESS WE JUST HEARD FROM IS THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE IN ARIZONA, RUSTY BOWERS. THIS IS A STATE THAT JOE BIDEN WON BY 10,000 VOTES AND YET SPEAKER BOWERS SPOKE ABOUT THE RELENTLESS PRESSURE HE WAS UNDER. >> THAT'S RIGHT. HE FACED PRESSURE FROM TRUMP AND TRUMP'S LAWYERS. BOWERS RECOUNTED A CONVERSATION HE HAD WITH JOHN EASTMAN.
IN THAT CONVERSATION, HE ASKED TO CALL A VOTE TO DECERTIFY STATE ELECTORAL'S -- STATE COLLECTORS. HERE'S WHAT HE SAID IN RESPONSE. >> I SAID, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO? AND HE SAID, JUST DO IT AND LET THE COURT SORTED OUT. AND I SAID YOU'RE ASKING ME TO , DO SOMETHING THAT'S NEVER BEEN DONE IN HISTORY, THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, AND I'M GOING TO PUT MY STATE THROUGH THAT WITHOUT SUFFICIENT PROOF? AND THAT'S GOING TO BE GOOD ENOUGH WITH ME? THAT I WOULD PUT US THROUGH THAT - MY STATE - THAT I SWORE TO UPHOLD BOTH IN CONSTITUTION AND IN LAW? NO, SIR. >> BOWERS SAID HE ALSO FACED PRESSURE FROM TRUMP AND HE TOLD
TRUMP THAT HE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL TO OVERTURN THE RELET -- THE ELECTIONS. EVEN NOW, BAUER FEELS A TARGET ON HIS BACK FROM TRUMP. AHEAD OF TODAY'S HEARING, TRUMP PUT OUT A STATEMENT THAT BOWERS IS A REPUBLICAN IN NAME ONLY, AND THAT HE TOLD BOWERS HE WON THE ELECTION AND THE ELECTION WAS RIGGED. HE WAS ASKED ABOUT THAT IN HIS TESTIMONY TODAY, AND HE SAID THAT WAS ALL FALSE AND DID NOT SAY THAT TO HIS PRESIDENT. HE REPEATED AGAIN AND AGAIN THAT HE WOULD NEVER DO ANYTHG ILLEGAL TO OVERTURN ARIZONA'S ELECTION RESULTS. JUDY: AND BOWERS HAS DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS A CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN. LISA, WE LEARNED THE SUM OF THIS PRESSURE CAMPAIGN WAS COMING FROM MEMBERS OF CONGRESS
THEMSELVES WHO WERE PUSHING ELECTION OFFICIALS TO ACCEPT WHAT THEY CALLED ALTERNATE SLATES OF ELECTORS. LISA: THIS IS A CHARGE FROM THE COMMITTEE. IN ADDITION TO THE IDEA LAURA WAS TALKING ABOUT THAT THE PRESIDENT AND THOSE AROUND HIM WERE PUSHING STATES TO OVERTURN THE RESULT AND SAY THAT HE HAD ONE, WE HEARD TESTIMONY THAT THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WAS TRYING TO PUSH ANOTHER IDEA, THAT NO MATTER WHAT THE RESULTS WERE, THAT ALTERNATE ELECTORS, THE ONES WHO CAST THE FINAL VOTES IN OUR SYSTEM, AND THAT THE ELECTORS, THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT WHO WAS BEHIND THE IDEA. WE HEARD TESTIMONY TODAY THAT TRUMP GOT TOGETHER WITH THE CHAIRWOMAN OF THE TOP REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE IN THE COUNTRY. AND HERE IS HOW MCDANIEL
RECOUNTS THIS. >> WHAT DID THE PRESIDENT SAY WHEN HE CALLED YOU? RONNA MCDANIEL: ESSENTIALLY HE TURNED CALL TO MR. EASTMAN, WHO THEN PROCEEDED TO TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RNC HELPING THE CAMPAIGN GATHER CONTINGENT ELECTORS IN CASE ANY OF THE LEGAL CHALLENGES THAT WERE ON -- ONGOING CHANGED THE RESULT OF ANY OF THE STATES. I THINMORE JUST HELPING THEM REACH OUT AND ASSEMBLE THEM. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE CAMPAIGN DID TAKE THE LEAD AND WE WERE JUST HELPING THEM IN THAT ROLE. LISA: THAT IS THE KEY PORTION, THAT THE CAMPAIGN TOOK THE LEAD. TIMING MATTERS AND WE ARE ASKING IF IT WAS AFTER THE COURT CASES HAD ENDED AND IT WAS CLEAR THE PRESIDENT HAD LOST? BECAUSE THAT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT CRIMINAL ELECTION FRAUD. OR WAS IT BEFORE?
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS THAT CAME UP TODAY. ANDY FROM ARIZONA ASKED, WE HEARD TESTIMONY TODAY, AS TO THE STATE SPEAKER TO TRY TO OVERTURN THE RESULT, CREATE ELECTORS, AND SENATOR RON JOHNSON OF WISCONSIN. ON JANUARY 6, THE TESTIMONY IS THAT ONE OF HIS AIDES REACHED OUT TO MIKE PENCE'S STAFF AND SAID THE SENATOR WANTED TO HAND HIM A SLATE OF ALTERNATE ELECTORS, ON JANUARY 6. RON JOHNSON'S OFFICE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT AHEAD OF THE TIME BUT THERE IS A QUESTION IF ON JANUARY 6 RON JOHNSON W STILL TRYING TO BRING IN A STATE OF ELECTORS THAT HIS ESTATE HAD NOT DECIDED. JUDY: LISA, THE FOCUS TODAY WAS ON STATE AND LOCAL ELECTION OFFICIALS.
TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT WE HEARD FROM THE COMMITTEE IN TERMS OF WHITE HOUSE OFFICIALS THEMSELVES PRESSURING LOCAL ELECTION PEOPLE. LISA: TWO WOMEN FROM FULTON COUNTY MOVING ABSENTEE BALLOTS LATE AT NIGHT, THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN FOR MONTHS SAID THEY WERE SECRET SUITCASES OF BALLOTS. THAT WAS NOT TRUE. SHANE MOSS EARLIER, HER MOTHER RUBY FREEMAN TESTIFIED ABOUT THE THREATS THAT CAME FROM HER NAME BEING USED FROM THE, PEOPLE KNOCKING ON HER DOOR AND THE FBI SAYING SHE HAD TO MOVE BECAUSE HER -- BECAUSE THE THREATS TO HER LIFE WERE SO SERIOUS. THIS IS WHAT SHE TOLD THE COMMITTEE. >> THERE IS NOWHERE I FEEL SAFE. NOWHERE. DO YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO HAVE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TARGET YOU? THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES IS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT EVERY AMERICAN. NOT TO TARGET ONE. BUT HE TARGETED ME, LADY RUBY, A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER, A MOTHER, A PROUD AMERICAN CITIZEN WHO STOOD UP TO HELP FULTON COUNTY RUN ELECTION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC. LISA: SHE REPRESENTS THOUSANDS OF ELECTION WORKERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND LOOK AT WHAT HAS HAPPENED. THEY EXPERIENCE THREATS, ONE IN SIX. ELECTION OFFICIALS PLAN TO QUIT BY 2024. THIS IS NOT JUST ONE PERSON WITH ONE EXTREME VERSION. MANY ELECTION OFFICIALS ARE FEELING PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL HARM FROM THE LAST ELECTION. JUDY: THOSE NUMBERS ARE ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. LAURA, WE HEARD FROM THE TOP TO
ELTION OFFICIALS FROM GEORGIA, BRAD RAFFENSPERGER AND THE OFFICIAL WHO WORKED WITH HIM, GABRIEL STERLING. WE ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THE PHONE CALL TRUMP PLACED AND SPENT OVER ONE HOUR PRESSURING RAFFENSPERGER. WHAT ELSE DID WE LEARN TODAY ABOUT THE PRESSURE HE PUT ON THEM? LAURA: STERLING AND HIS TESTIMONY SAID THE ONSLAUGHT OF CONSPIRACY THEORIES PUSHED BY TRUMP AS HE AND HIS TEAM TRIED TO FIGHT IT, IT WAS LIKE SHOVELING OUT THE OCEAN. THE SECOND WAS THE SPECIFICITY OF RAFFENSPERGER'S TESTIMONY. HE WENT INTO DETAIL ABOUT EVERYTHING HE INVESTIGATED, SAYING HE INVESTIGATED EVERY ELEMENT OF THE ALLEGATIONS TRUMP TEAM BROUGHT TO HIM. >> THEY SAID THERE WAS OVER 66,000 UNDERAGE VOTERS, WE FOUND
THAT THERE'S ACTUALLY ZERO. THERE WERE ZERO NONREGISTERED VOTERS. THEY SAID THERE WERE 2,056 FELONS. WE IDENTIFIED 74 OR LESS THAT WERE ACTUALLY STILL ON FELONY SENTENCE. EVERY SINGLE ALLEGATION WE CHECKED, WE RAN DOWN THE RABBIT TRAIL TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR NUMBERS WERE ACCURATE. LAURA: RAFFENSPERGER DETAILED ALL THE STUFF ABOUT THE ALLEGATIONS TRUMP BROUGHT TO HIM AND HOW THEY WERE ALL FALSE. HE ALSO TALKED ABOUT THE PHONE CALL TRUMP MADE TO HIM, PRESSURING HIM TO FIND MORE THAN 11,000 VOTES. A LOT OF LAW EXPERTS THINK THAT IS ENOUGH TO BRING CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST TRUMP AND HIS ALLIES. THE COMMITTEE TODAY BROUGHT UP THE LEGALITY OF WHAT WE WITNESSED ON JANUARY 6 IN THE LEAD UP TO IT AND THEY SAID OVER AND OVER THAT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO BE PAYING
ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY PRESENT. BUT IT IS NOT JUST THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT THAT COULD BRING CRIMINAL CHARGES. THE FULTON COUNTY D.A. COULD. THERE IS A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION GOING ON THAT SHE IS OVERSEEING. THEY ALSO HEARD TESTIMONY FROM RAFFENSPERGER EARLIER THIS MONTH. SO IT SPEAKS TO THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT JUST THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, BUT THAT IN GEORGIA THEY CAN ALSO BRING CHARGES AGAINST TRUMP AS WE LOOK TOWARDS WHAT POTENTIAL RAMIFICATIONS COULD BE. JUDY: THANK YOU BOTH, IN A VERY FULL DAY OF TESTIMONY. THANK YOU FOR COVERING FROM THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE CAPITAL. AS WE HAVE BEEN REPORTING. -- AS WE HAVE BEEN REPORTING LOCAL AND STATE ELECTION , OFFICIALS CONTINUE TO FACE UNPRECEDENTED PRESSURES. NEARLY 1 IN 3 KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS LEFT THEIR JOB BECAUSE OF THREATS OR FEARS FOR THEIR SAFETY.
THAT IS ACCORDING TO A SURVEY RELEASED BY THE BRENNAN CENTER FOR JUSTICE. I'M JOINED NOW BTWO PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THOSE CHALLENGES. NEW MEXICO SECRETARY OF STATE MAGGIE TOLOUSE OLIVER, A DEMOCRAT, HAS BATTLED WITH ELECTION DENIERS IN HER STATE. AND FORMER KENTUCKY SECRETARY OF STATE TREY GRAYSON IS ADVISING LOCAL OFFICIALS WHO ARE PREPARING FOR POTENTIALLY CONTENTIOUS ELECTIONS THIS FALL. WELCOME TO BOTH OF YOU. WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE. MS. OLIVER, WHAT STOOD OUT TODAY? WHEN YOU LISTENED TO WHAT THE ELECTION OFFICIALS HAD TO SAY, WHAT STOOD OUT THE MOST? >> THANK YOU FOR HAVING US HERE AND FOR THE QUESTION. I CAN RELATE VERY DEEPLY TO A LOT OF WHAT SECRETARY RAFFENSPERGER AND GABE STERLING AND THE ELECTION WORKERS COME THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE IN ARIZONA, I HAVE BEEN THROUGH A
LESSER VERSION OF WHAT THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH, AND IT IS DEEPLY DISCONCERTING AND TROUBLING FOR ME. BUT I WILL ALSO SAY THAT EVERYTHING SAID TODAY REALLY HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD, PARTICULARLY THE ARIZONA SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE WHEN HE REFERRED TO NOT BEING WILLING TO VIOLATE HIS OATH OF OFFICE, PARTICULARLY ON THE BASIS OF FEELINGS AND ASSUMPTIONS AND NOT EVIDENCE. THAT WAS CRITICAL TESTIMONY WE HEARD TODAY. JUDY: TREY GRAYSON, WHAT RESONATED THE MOST WITH YOU FROM WHAT YOU HEARD TODAY? >> THE ELECTION WORKERS FROM FULTON COUNTY. I WAS MORE FAMILIAR WITH WHAT SECRETARY RAFFENSPERGER AND THE SPEAKER FROM ARIZONA WERE GOING TO SAY BUT THOSE TWO WOMEN, WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE THAT. THAT IS HOW WE RUN OUR ELECTION.
IT IS LOW PAY OR VOLUNTEERS AND THERE ARE TUSANDS OF THEM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THEY DO NOT SIGN UP TO GET HARASSED OR HAVE TO MOVE. IT WAS MOVING TESTIMONY AND WATCHING YOUR COVERAGE, I TEARED UP LISTENING TO THEM BECAUSE OUR SYSTEM DOES NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT FOLKS LIKE THAT AND IN SOME RESPECTS, ELECTION OFFICIALS, WE HAVE KIND OF SIGNED UP TO DEAL WITH THIS BUT THOSE WHO ARE MAKING THINGS WORK ON THE GROUND, IT WAS STIRRING TESTIMONY. JUDY: IT WAS VERY HARD NOT TO TEAR UP, LISTENING TO THE WOMEN WHO WORKED AS ELECTION WORKERS IN GEORGIA. IN NEW MEXICO, HOW MUCH TRAINING DO MOST ELECTION OFFICIALS GO THROUGH? IS THERE A STANDARD FOR WHAT YOU HAVE TO LEARN BEFORE YOU WORK IN ELECTIONS? >> THERE IS A STANDARD.
THEY GO THROUGH A CERTAIN AMOT OF TRAINING. IT IS NOT VERY MUCH. IF YOU ARE A BRAND-NEW ELECTION WORKER, DEPENDING ON WHAT COUNTY YOU ARE WORKING IN AND HOW COMPLICATED THE INDIVIDUAL PROCESSES ARE, YOU MIGHT GO THROUGH THREE TO FIVE HOURS OF TRAINING AND ONLINE TRAINING. RETURNING WORKERS HAVE BEEN THROUGH ELECTIONS MANY TIMES AND THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT REASON WHY WE NEED TO RETAIN OUR ELECTION WORKERS. THESE ARE NOT NECESSARILY FULL-TIME WORKERS. THEY DO NOT LIVE AND BREATHE ELECTIONS. THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY VOLUNTEERS THAT COME OUT ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR TO HELP RUN DEMOCRACY AND THE MORE EXPERIENCE THEY GET, THE BETTER THEY ARE AT THEIR JOBS AND THE MORE THEY KNOW. JUDY: PICKING UP ON THAT, TREY GRAYSON, FROM KENTUCKY, I JOTTED DOWN THE STATISTICS THAT
SOMETHING LIKE ONE IN SIX ELECTION WORKERS HAVE EXPERIENCED A THREAT. DOES NOT SURPRISE YOU -- DOES THAT SURPRE YOU? >> TODAY IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT 20% OF THE ELECT DID OFFICIALS ARE RETIRING THIS YEA EVEN IN KENTUCKY, WE ARE SEEING THIS. THEY HAD TROUBLE RECRUITING POLL WORKERS IN OUR RECENT PRIMARY BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE WANT TO STEP ASIDE. AND PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS, THE PANDEMIC PLAYED A ROLE BUT THESE THREATS HAVE CHANGED THE DYNAMIC.
IT IS UNFORTUNATE BUT THE IMPACT WILL BE FELT AT THE LOCAL LEVEL I REPUBLICANAND DEMOCRATS AND THESE CLERKS ARE QUESTIONING WHY THEY ARE DOING IT. IT'S NOT WORTH IT. JUDY: WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THIS FALL ELECTIONS? MIDTERM ELECTIONS, ALL ELECTIONS MATTER, THESE MATTER. WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN? >> IT MEANS COUNTY CLERKS IN NEW MEXICO ARE GOING TO BE STRUGGLING TO RECRUIT POLL WORKERS. AND WE CANNOT HAVE AN ELECTION WITHOUT BIPARTISAN AND NONPARTISAN GROUPS OF PEOPLE, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST DEDICATED TO DOING THEIR CIVIC DUTY WHO COME OUT AND GIVE UP THEIR TIME FOR VERY LITTLE MONEY IF ANY TO HELP OUR ELECTIONS.
SO THEY ARE GOING TO STRUGGLE TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE STAFFING NECESSARY TO SUPPORT THE VOTERS WHO COME OUT AND TO PROCESS THE MAIL BALLOTS. THESE COUNTY CLERKS ALREADY HAVE A BIG CHALLENGING JOB AND NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND ENOUGH INDIVIDUALS TO CONDUCT THIS PROCESS IS A REAL THREAT. >> I AM A REPUBLICAN, SO THIS HITS ME PERSONALLY AND IT BOTHERS ME TO SEE MEMBERS OF MY PARTY APPLYING THIS MUCH PRESSURE, WITHOUT EVIDENCE, WITHOUT FACTS, WITHOUT THE LAW AND THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE IT IS HAVING. THAT IS WHEN THE REASONS I CONTINUE SPEAKING OUT. WE NEED PEOPLE IN MY PARTY TO STOP DOING THIS. OUR DEMOCRACY IS AT RISK. JUDY: VERY POWERFUL WORDS. TREY GRAYSON AND MAGGIE OLIVER,
THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH. IN THE DAY'S OTHER NEWS, KEY U.S. SENATORS ANNOUNCED NEGOTIATORS HAVE NEARLY FINISHED A BIPARTISAN GUN VIOLENCE BILL. REPUBLICAN JOHN CORNYN AND DEMOCRAT CHRIS MURPHY SAID FINAL LANGUAGE WOULD BE READY SOON. IT'S EXPECTED TO CALL FOR TOUGHER BACKGROUND CHECKS ON YOUTHFUL GUN BUYERS AND FOR NEW SPENDING ON SCHOOL SAFETY AND MENTAL HEALTH. THE TOP LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL IN TEXAS CHARGED TODAY THAT THE POLICE RESPONSE TO THE UVALDE SCHOOL MASSACRE WAS AN "ABJECT FAILURE". COLONEL STEVE MCCRAW TESTIFIED AT A STATE SATE HEARING. HE SAID PICE COULD HAVE STOPPED THE GUNMAN WITHIN 3 MINUTES, BUT THEY ASSUMED A CLASSROOM DOOR
WAS LOCKED -- AND WAITED FOR A KEY. WE'LL RETURN TO THIS AFTER THE NEWS SUMMARY. ALABAMA REPUBLICANS AND FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP ARE WAITING TONIGHT TO SEE WHO WINS THEIR U.S. SENATE NOMINATION. CONGRESSMAN MO BROOKS FACES KATIE BRITT IN A RUNOFF. MR. TRUMP INITIALLY ENDORSED BROOKS, THEN SWITCHED HIS SUPPORT TO BRITT. THERE WERE ALSO PRIMARIES AND RUNOFFS TODAY IN ARKANSAS, GEORGIA, AND VIRGINIA. IN UKRAINE, INVADING RUSSIAN FORCES AND THEIR ALLIES ADVANCED TOWARD THE LAST BASTION OF GOVERNMENT FIGHTERS IN THE EAST. THEY SEIZED TOWNS NEAR LISSY-CHANSK. THAT CITY SITS ACROSS A RIVER FROM SEVERO-DONETSK, WHICH IS NOW LARGELY IN RUSSIAN HANDS. MEANWHILE, U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL MERRICK GARLAND MET WITH UKRAINE'S PROSECUTOR GENERAL AND AT A UKRAINIAN-POLISH BORDER POST, HE VOWED TO INVESTIGATE
WAR CRIMES. >> THE UNITED STATES IS SENDING AN UNMISTAKABLE MESSAGE. THERE IS NO PLACE TO HIDE. WE AND OUR PARTNERS WILL PURSUE EVERY AVENUE AVAILABLE TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE ATROCITIES ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. JUDY: GARLAND ALSO ANNOUNCED THE FORMATION OF A WAR CRIMES ACCOUNTABILITY TEAM. THE WORST MONSOON FLOODS IN MORE THAN A CENTURY SUBMERGED MORE OF BANGLADESH TODAY. THE DISASTER HAS KILLED AT LEAST 69 PEOPLE THERE, AND IN NORTHEASTERN INDIA, AND DISPLACED MANY THOUSANDS. VILLAGERS IN NORTHEASTERN BANGLADESH WADED THROUGH STREETS TODAY WITH WATER UP TO THEIR KNEES. SOME CREATED MAKESHIFT BOATS TO GET AROUND. PARTS OF SOUTH CHINA ARE ALSO FACING MAJOR FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES, AFTER WEEKS OF HEAVY STORMS. MORE THAN 145,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE BY FLOODWATERS HITTING 50-YEAR HIGHS. IMAGES FROM STATE T-V SHOW VICTIMS BEING RESCUED FROM THEIR HOMES. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF RAILWAY
WORKERS IN BRITAIN STAGED THEIR LARGEST STRIKE IN 3 DECADES, TODAY. THE 24-HOUR ACTION CENTERED ON DEMAS FOR BETTER PAY AND CONDITIONS. WITH TRAINS AT A STANDSTILL, STATIONS WERE LEFT DESERTED -- AND TRAVEL PLANS WERE DERAILED FOR MILLIONS OF COMMUTERS. >> I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE STRIKING, B IF WE GIVE THEM A WAGE INCREASE TO THE RAILWAYS, THEN IT'S GOING TO BE DOCTORS, NURSES, AND THAT'S GOING TO BE INFLATIONARY. >> I KIND OF UNDERSTAND IT, BUT WE ARE IN THE SAME BOAT. WE ARE NOT POTENTIALLY GETTING A PAY RISE, YOU KNOW, IN THE NHS AND EVERYTHING. I KIND OF UNDERSTAND IT BUT THE PEOPLE THAT NEED HIT, THEY'RE NOT HITTING. JUDY: UNION LEADERS PLAN 2 MORE STRIKE DAYS THIS WEEK. BACK IN THIS COUNTRY, TWITTER'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS UNANIMOUSLY URGED SHAREHOLDERS TO APPROVE THE COMPANY'S PROPOSED SALE TO
ELON MUSK. THE BUSINESS MAGNATE SAYS HE WANTS TO GO AHEAD WITH THE $44 BILLION PURCHASE. THAT'S EVEN THOUGH TWITTER'S STOCK HAS FALLEN WELL BELOW WHAT HE OFFERED TO PAY. U.S. HOME SALES FELL IN MAY FOR A FOURTH STRAIGHT MONTH -- AS MORTGAGE INTEREST RATES ROSE. SALES SLIPPED MORE THAN 8.5% FROM A YEAR EARLIER. THE NATIONAL MEDIAN PRICE ROSE NEARLY 15% FROM A YEAR AGO TO A RECORD $407,000. CHARITABLE GIVING IN THE U.S. IS FEELING THE BITE OF INFLATION. STILL TO COME THE FUTURE OF , CRYPTO-CURRENCIES IN QUESTION AFTER PRECIPITOUS DROPS IN VALUE. A SUPREME COURT DECISION ALLOWS
PUBLIC FUNDS TO BE USEFOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. WOMEN WHO FACILITATED ABORTIONS BEFORE ROE V. WADE REFLECT ON THE UNCERTAINTY OF THAT TIME. PLUS MUCH MORE. JUDY: AS WE REPOE MORE QUESTIONS AND STRONG CRITICISM TODAY ABOUT HOW LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONDED IN UVALDE, TEXAS, TO THE MASS SHOOTING WHEN IT HAPPENED. THE TEXAS SENATE HELD A SPECIAL HEARING TODAY WHERE NEW DETAILS HAVE EMERGED ABOUT WHAT OFFICERS DID - AND DID NOT DO - IN THOSE CRITICAL MOMENTS. AMNA NAWAZ LOOKS AT THE LATEST. REPORTER: JUDY, IT TOOK LAW ENFORCEMENT ONE HOUR, 14 MINUTES AND 8 SECONDS TO ENGAGE THE SHOOTER, WHO WAS IN A CLASSROOM. TESTIFYING BEFORE A STATE SENATE COMMITTEE TODAY, THE DIRECTOR OF TEXAS' DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, STEVEN MCCRAW, OFFERED THIS SCATHING ASSESSMENT OF THE UVALDE POLICE RESPONSE. STEVEN MCCRAW: THERE'S COMPELLING EVIDENCE THAT THE LAW ENFORCEMT RESPONSE TO THE
ATTACK AT ROBB ELEMENTARY WAS AN ABJECT FAILURE AND ANTITHETICAL TO EVERYTHING WE'VE LEARNED OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES SINCE THE COLUMBINE MASSACRE. 3 MINUTES AFTER THE SUBJECT ENTERED THE WEST BUILDING, THERE WAS A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF ARMED OFFICERS WEARING BODY ARMOR TO ISOLATE, DISTRACT, AND NEUTRALIZE THE SUBJECT. THE ONLY THING STOPPING A HALLWAY OF DEDICATED OFFICERS FROM ANY ROOM 111 AND 112 WAS THE ON-SCENE COMMANDER WHO DECIDED TO PLACE THE LIVES OF OFFICERS FOR THE LIVES OF CHILDREN. THE OFFICERS HAD WEAPONS. THE CHILDREN HAD NONE. REPORTER: TONY PLOHETSKI IS AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER FOR THE AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN COVERING THE ROBB ELEMENTARY MASSACRE. HE JOINS US NOW FROM AUSTIN, TEXAS. THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US. FROM THE BEGINNING, WE HAVE BEEN GETTING DIFFERENT DETAILS AND
DETAILS HAVE CHANGED. AT FIRST THEY SAID THE GUNMAN HAD BARRICADED HIMSELF, THEN THEY SAID OFFICERS DID NOT HAVE PROTECTIVE. THOSE THINGS WERE NOT TRUE. WHAT NEW THINGS DID WE LEARN FROM THE HEARING TODAY? TONY: THERE WAS A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT TO WHAT EXTENT AUTHORITIES TRIED TO ACCESS THE CLASSROOM WHERE THE GUNMAN HAD BARRICADED HIMSELF. WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT ACCORDING TO BODYCAM VIDEO, AUTHORITIES WHO ARRIVED ON SCENE NEVER EVEN TRIED TO ACCESS THE CLASSROOM. THEY NEVER TRIED THE DOOR TO SEE IF IWAS LOCKED. FURTHERMORE, NOW THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THE CLASSROOM DOOR WASN'T EVEN LOCKED. FOR ALL THAT TIME. THE TIME SPENT TRYING TO ACQUIRE A MASTER KEY, ACCORDING TO TESTIMONY TODAY, THAT TIME WAS WASTED AND OFFICIALS COULD HAVE
BEEN DOING OTHER THINGS AND TAKING OTHER STEPS TO TRY TO BREACH THE CLASSROOM. REPORTER: IT IS INCREDIBLE TO THINK THEY NEVER EVEN TRIED THE DOOR. TONY, YOU REVIEWED SOME VIDEO SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE FROM INSIDE THE SCHOOL AND CAPTURED SOME OF THE CRITICAL MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOTING. TELL ME ABOUT WHAT THIS IMAGE SHOWS AND TELLS US ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. TONY: I WAS ALLOWED TO REVIEW A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF FOOTAGE FROM THAT VIDEO CAMERA, THE SECURITY CAMERA IN THE HALLWAY. THIS PHOTO IS NOTEWORTHY. IT WAS TAKEN FROM THE VIDEO AT 11:52 A.M., 19 MINUTES AFTER THE GUNMAN ENTERED THE SCHOOL. WHAT IS SO SIGNIFICANT IS THAT YOU CAN SEE TWO POLICE OFFICERS,
AT LEAST TWO WERE ON THE SCENE AT THAT POINT WITH HIGH-POWERED WEAPONS AND ONE OF THEM HAD A BALLISTIC SHIELD. SO ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS REVIEWING THIS INFORMATION, THAT WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH ACCORDING TO THEM TO DO WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO TO BREACH THE CLASSROOM AND MAKE EVERY EFFORT POSSIBLE TO TAKE OUT THE SHOOTER. REPORTER: IT IS SUCH A DAMAGING ASSESSMENT FROM THE RESPONSE. HAVE WE HAD ANY RESPONSE FROM UVALDE POLICE? TONY: LITTLE HAS BEEN SAID. WE KNOW THE UVALDE SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICE CHIEF, WHO REALLY WAS THE COMMANDER, OR AT LEAST HE ASSUMED COMMAND, HE TESTIFIED PRIVATELY TODAY FOR FIVE HOURS TO A TEXAS HOUSE COMMITTEE BUT WITH REGARD TO ANY MAJOR PUBLIC STATEMENT, HE HAS
SAID PRECIOUS LITTLE ABOUT WHAT STEPS THEY DID AND DID NOT TAKE THAT HORRIBLE DAY. REPORTER: I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT PEOPLE ON THE GROUND IN UVALDE. YESTERDAY, THERE WERE SOME SIGNS OF NORMALCY. THEY HELD A LITTLE LEAGUE ALL-STAR CHAMPIONSHIP. SIX OF THE KIDS WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE WERE BECAUSE THEY WERE KILLED IN THAT SHOOTING. -- SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE WERE NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE KILLED IN THE SHOOTING. TONY: PEOPLE WE HAVE TALKED TO HAVE A RANGE OF EMOTIONS. PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO GET BACK TO SOME SENSE OF NORMALCY, IF THAT CAN NEVER REALLY HAPPEN. BUT LET ME ASSURE YOU THATHE PAIN IN THE COMMUNITY, THE TOWN OF 16,000 PEOPLE, RUNS DEEP AND THERE IS A CONTINUED THIRST TO GET TO THAT TRUTH AND FULLY AND BROADLY UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED
AND HOPEFULLY STOP IT FROM HAPPENING IN ANY COMMUNITY AGAIN. REPORTER: TONY HAS BEEN COVERING THAT MASSACRE FROM ONE MONTH AGO, JOINING US FROM AUSTIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. TONY: THANK YOU. JUDY: THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HANDED ANOTHER VICTORY TODAY TO RELIGIOUS RIGHTS ADVOCATES. AS -- ADVOCATES. AS JOHN YANG REPORTS, IT HAD TO DO WITH AN UNUSUAL EDUCATION FUNDING PROGRAM IN A SMALL NEW ENGLAND STATE. JOHN: JUDY, THE CASE INVOLVES OLIVIA CARSON OF GLENBUR MAINE, A TOWN SO SMALL THAT LIKE HALF THE STATE'S SCHOOL DISTRICTS IT DOESN'T HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL. UNDER MAINE LAW, THOSE STUDENTS MAY GET TAXPAYER MONEY TO HELP PAY TUITION AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS AS LONG AS THEY'RE NONSECTARIAN.
BECAUSE OF THAT RESTRICTION, THE STATE WOULD NOT PAY FOR OLIVIA TO GO TO BANGOR CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, WHICH HER PARENTS HAD CHOSEN FOR HER. TODAY, A 6-3 MAJORITY OF THE COURT SAID THAT VIOLATES THE FIRST AMENDMENT'S GUARANTEE OF FREE EXERCISE OF RELIGION. MARCIA COY IS THE CHIEF WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT FOR THE NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL. THIS DIVISION FELL ALONG THE USUAL LIBERAL-CONSERVATIVE LINES. SIX CONSERVATIVE JUSTICES. CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS WROTE, A STATE NEED NOT SUBSIDIZE PRIVATE EDUCATION, BUT ONCE A STATE DECIDES TO DO SO, IT CANNOT DISQUALIFY SOME PRIVATE SCHOOLS SOLELY BECAUSE THEY ARE RELIGIOUS. THE STATE PAYS TUITION FOR CERTAIN STUDENTS OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS SO LONG AS THE SCHOOLS
ARE NOT RELIGIOUS. THAT IS DISCRIMINATION AGAINST RELIGION. MARCIA, CAN YOU UNPACK THE REASONING HERE? MARSHA: THIS CASE WAS A STEP BEYOND RECENT CASES INVOLVING THE FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE ON THE SUPREME COURT. IN THE MOST RECENT CASE INVOLVING SCHOOLS, IT WAS A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM THAT RELIGIOUS PARENTS AND SCHOOLS WERE EXCLUDED FROM AND TO THE COURT REITERATED THAT YOU CANNOT DISCRIMINATE, IF A STATE IS SUBSIDIZING PRIVATE SCHOOLS, YOU CANNOT DISCRIMINATE SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF RELIGIOUS STATUS. THE COURT LEFT OPEN, WHAT ABOUT IF THE MONEY IS USED FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES BY A SCHOOL, NOT JUST BECAUSE IT IS A RELIGIOUS SCHOOL? TODAY THE COURTS SEEMED TO SAY THERE IS NO DISTINCTION. IF A STATE IS SUBSIDIZING
PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND HAST TO ALSO SUBSIDIZE RELIGIOUS PRIVATE SCHOOLS. THIS IS BASED ON THE FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE. THE FIRST AMENDMENT SAYS TWO THINGS ABOUT RELIGION. CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A RELIGION OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE OF RELIGION. THOSE CAUSES, AS THE COURT HAS SAID, ARE SOMETIMES IN TENSION WITH EACH OTHER. AND THAT WAS THE CASE HERE. YOU HAD PARENTS WHO WANTED THEIR STUDENTS TO ATTEND RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS, SAYING YOU ARE VIOLATING FREE EXERCISE RIGHTS. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THE STATE OF MAINE SAID IF WE SUBSIDIZE YOU AND PRIVATE RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS, WE MIGHT BE VIOLATING THE ESTABLISHMT CLAUSE. JOHN: JUSTICE BREYER WROTE THE MAIN DISSENT FOR THE THREE
LIBERAL JUSTICES. AND JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR SAID , ANY STATE THAT VALUES ITS HISTORIC ANTIESTABLISHMENT INTEREST MORE THAN THIS COURT DOES WILL HAVE TO CURTAIL THE SUPPORT IT OFFERS TO ITS CITIZENS. HELP US UNDERSTAND THIS ARGUMENT . MARSHA: I THINK SHE IS SAYING THAT BASICALLY THE MAJORITY HAS ELEVATED THE FREE EXCISE CLAUSE ABOVE THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND AS SHE SAID AT THE OPENING OF HER DISSENT, SORT OF DESTROYING THE OLD DOCTRINE KNOWN AS THE WALL OF SEPARATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE. JUSTICE BREYER WAS ALSO CONCNED ABOUT THIS ELEVATION OF THE FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE OVER THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE.
HE SAID THE COURT HAS ALWAYS SAID THERE ARE WAYS TO ALLOW STATES TO DEAL WITH SPECIFIC PROBLEMS WITHOUT VIOLATING THE FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE OR ESTABLISHMENT LAWS AND HE THOUGHT THAT DEAN WAS DOING EXACTLY THAT IN ORDER TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM OF A LACK OF PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN RURAL AREAS. SO THIS IS THE CONTINUATION OF A TREND IN THE SUPREME COURT. THIS CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY TRULY DOES FAVOR OF FREE EXERCISE CLAUSE. SO THE COURT IS REALLY EXPANDING THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN PUBLIC LIFE AND I AM NOT QUITE SURE HOW MUCH FARTHER IT WILL GO. JOHN: MARCIA COYLE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. JUDY: IN LIGHT OF THE LEAKED SUPREME COURT OPINION THAT WOULD
REVERSE THE LANDMARK SUPREME COURT CASE ROE VERSUS WADE, THE COUNTRY FACES THE PROSPECT OF A FUTURE WHERE ABORTION WILL NO LONGER BE LEGAL NATIONWIDE. AMNA NAWAZ IS BACK WITH A REPORT BASED ON HER TALKING WITWOMEN WHO REMEMBER WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE BEFORE ROE. REPORTER: IT WAS JUST NOT -- >> IT WAS JUST NOT SOMETHING THAT ANY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROH. IT'S JUST AS SIMPLE AS THAT. REPORTER: DECADES AGO, NOW-81-YEAR-OLD ROBERTA BRANDES GRATZ WAS A REPORTER IN NEW YORK CITY, IN HER 20'S, WHEN SHE HAD AN UNPLANNEDREGNANCY. SHE TRAVELED TO A CLINIC IN PUERTO RICO FOR WHAT WAS THEN AN ILLEGAL PROCEDURE IN NEW YORK STATE AND ACROSS MUCH OF AMERICA -- AN ABORTION. ROBERTA: IT WAS THE KIND OF HOSPITAL WHERE WOMEN GAVE BIRTH AS WELL AS HAD ABORTIONS. SO YOU HEARD BABIES CRYING AND YOU SAW WOMEN WHO WERE THERE FOR THE SAME REASON YOU WERE. I HAD AN ANESTHETIC AND IT DID NOT TOTALLY TAKE.
SO IT WAS PARTIALLY PAINFUL. IT WAS HUMILIATING BECAUSE I KNEW I WAS DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL. REPORTER: BEFORE THE 1973 SUPREME COURT DECISION, ROE V. WADE, ABORTIONS WERE PROHIBITED IN 33 STATES AND ONLY ALLOWED IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES IN 13 OTHERS. BUT WOMEN IN THOSE STATES STILL HAD ABORTIONS. SOME, THROUGH UNSAFE SO-CALLED BACK-ALLEY PROCEDURES. OTHERS, TRIED TO INDUCE ABORTIONS THEMSELVES. >> WE HAD ALMOST NO OPTIONS, YOU WOULD EITHER PUT YOURSELF AT RISK BY SELF INFLICTING AN ABORTION USING KNITTING NEEDLES, CROCHET NEEDLES, ANYTHING THAT CAN STOP. TAKE BIG BLACK PILLS. THERE WAS NO OTHER OPTION THAT I KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT. REPORTER: BYLLYE AVERY IS A HEALTH CARE ACTIVIST. SHE'S BEEN WORKING ON
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ISSUES SINCE 1971. AT THE TIME, WOMEN WOULD ALSO TRAVEL TO TERMINATE THEIR PREGNANCIES ABROAD OR TO NEW YORK, WHERE ABORTIONS WERE LEGALIZED IN 1970. BUT AVERY SAYS THAT KIND OF TRAVEL JUST WASN'T POSSIBLE FOR MANY WOMEN SHE COUNSELED IN FLORIDA, WHERE THE PROCEDURE WAS ILLEGAL IN MOST CASES. BYLLYE: A BLACK WOMAN CA AND WE STARTED GIVING HER THIS INFORMATION. SHE SAID, “I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY TO GO TO NEW YORK. I DON'T KNOW ANYBODY THERE.” AND ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO LATER, SHE DIED FROM A SELF-INDUCED ABORTION. SO THAT REALLY OPENED MY EYES THAT EVEN IF WE HAD ACCESS TO ABORTION, IF WOMEN DIDN'T HAVE THE MEANS BY WHICH TO PAY FO IT, THEY STILL DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ACCESS. REPORTER: THROUGHOUT THE 1950S AND 1960S, AN ESTIMATED 200,000 TO 1.2 MILLION ILLEGAL ABORTIONS WERE PERFORMED A YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES. HUNDREDS OF WOMEN DIED EVERY YEAR FROM BOTCHED PROCEDURES. IN THE EARLY 1960S, IN NEW YORK CITY ALONE, ABORTION ACOUNTED FOR HALF OF ALL
CHILDBIRTH-RELATED DEATHS AMONG NONWHITE AND PUERTO RICAN WOMEN. HEATHER: BEFORE ROE, THERE WERE SEPTIC ABORTION WARDS IN HOSPITALS OF WOMEN WHO HAD TRIED TO EITHER INDUCE THEIR OWN ABORTION OR WENT TO SOMEONE WHO WASN'T RELIABLE, WASN'T TRUSTWORTHY, AND HAD DONE DAMAGE TO THEM. REPORTER: AS A GRADUATE STUDENT IN 1965, HEATHER BOOTH CO-FOUNDED AN UNDERGROUND ABORTION SERVICE IN CHICAGO USING A CODE NAME. >> I SAID, WE CAN USE MY PHONE BUT CHANGET SO THEY DON'T ASK , FOR ELEANOR. HOW ABOUT JANE? NOBODY IS CALLED JANE ANYMORE. >> WE HAD PHONE NUMBERS ON BULLETIN BOARDS ACROSS CHICAGO. PREGNANT?
CALLED JANE. REPORTER: A NEW FILM, “THE JANES” AIRING ON HBO AND HBO MAX, TELLS THE STORY OF THOSE WOMEN - WHO CALLED THEMSELVES THE SERVICE. BETWEEN 1969 AND 1973, USING A NETWORK OF SECRECOMMUNICATIONS AND SAFE HOUSES TO PROTECT EACH OTHER AND THE WOMEN SEEKING HELP, THE JANES PERFORMED THOUSANDS OF SAFE AND AFFORDABLE ABORTIONS. >> WOMEN WOULD LAUNCH INTO THESE STORIES, “I HAVE THREE CHILDREN, I HAVE NO MORE MONEY, MY HUSBAND IS LEAVING, OR MY HUSBAND IS SICK, OR I DON'T HAVE A HUSBAND, I'M 17 I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE, I'VE GOT THIS SCHOLARSHIP AND IF I DON'T DO THIS NOW." THEY WERREALLY COGENT AND IMPORTANT REASONS, BUT WE WOULD REALLY TRY TO MAKE CLEAR TO THEM THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO JUSTIFY THEMSELVES. >> IT WAS BUT THE QUESTION OF CREATING THE COMMUNITY, ENSURING THE COST WAS FEASIBLE, PROVIDING THE CARE AT ALL, AND THAT IT WAS ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE WHO WANTED IT. REPORTER: IN 1972 THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT ARRESTED SEVEN
MEMBERS OF THE SERVICE AND CHARGED THEM WITH ELEVEN COUNTS OF ABORTION AND CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT ABORTION. ONE OF THE "JANES” JUDITH ARCANA REMEMBERS THAT DAY. >> THEY TOOKE OUT TO THE PARKING LOT WHERE THEY CUFFED ME, AND THEN THEY TOOK ME INTO THIS VAN, YOU KN, AN ORDINARY POLICE VAN, METAL COLD. I WAS NERVOUS. I WAS PHYSICALLY UNCOMFORTABLE, LITERALLY SHUDDERING FROM THE COLD. REPORT: ARCANA WAS THE FIRST OF THE JANES TO BE LET OUT ON BAIL BECAUSE SHE HAD RECENTLY HAD A CHILD, AND WAS STILL NURSING. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT GOING HOME TO YOUR BABY AFTER THAT? >> I WENT AND STOOD, MAYBE I HAVE TO CRY. I WENT AND STOOD NEXT TO HIS CRIB AND HE WOKE UP. SO I PICKED HIM UP AND NURSED HIM, AND WHILE I WAS NURSING HIM, I COULD FEEL THE TENSION, WHICH I HAD NOT EVEN BEEN CONSCIOUS OF, JUST STREAMING OUT OF MY BODY, MOSTLY DOWN MY ARMS AND LEGS. REPORTER: A FEW MONTHS AFTER THEIR ARREST, THE SUPREME COURT
LEGALIZED ABORTION NATIONWIDE. THE CHARGES AGAINST THE JANES WERE DROPPED. NEARLY 50 YEARS ON, THE LEAKED DRAFT OPINION THAT WOULD REVERSE ROE WORRIES MANY ACTIVISTS WHO LIVED IN AN AMERICA BEFORE THE LANDMARK CASE. >> WOMEN'S LIVES WILL BE THWARTED. THEY WILL BE LESSENED. THEY'LL BE DIMINISHED BECAUSE THEIR FREEDOMS ARE DIMINISHED. IT MEANS IF YOU'RE RAPED, IF YOU'RE A VICTIM OF INCEST, IN MANY STATES, YOU WON'T HAVE AN OPTION TO HAVE ANOTHER DIRECTION IN YOUR LIFE. REPORTER: WHEN YOU HEARD ABOUT THE LEAKED SUPREME COURT DRAFT EARLIER THIS YEAR, AND IT LOOKS AS IF ROE COULD BE OVERTURNED, WHAT DID YOU THINK? BYLLYE: I WAS DEVASTATED. I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE WORSE FOR WORSE FOR A LOT OF WOMEN. IT'S GOING TO BE WORSE FOR WOMEN
WHO LIVE ON LOWER INCOMES. REPORTER: NEVERTHELESS, AVERY BELIEVES LIKE IN THE DAYS BEFORE ROE, WOMEN WILL FIND A WAY AROUND RESTRICTIONS. BYLLYE: THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A STEP BACKWARD, BUT I THINK IT'S GOING TO HAVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF EFFECT. THIS IS AN UNJUST LAW AND THESE YOUNG WOMEN ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE A BACKSEAT TO ANYBODY. THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT. I HAVE FAITH IN THEM. BECAUSE THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON IT. REPORTER: BACK IN NEW YORK, GRATZ SAYS GETTING HER OWN ILLEGAL ABORTION MOTIVATED HER TO REPORT ON OTHER WOMEN'S ABORTION STORIES. AND JUST MONTHS AFTER THE 1973 ROE V. WADE DECISION, SHE WROTE A GROUNDBREAKING PIECE IN MS MAGAZINE - ILLUSTRATED WITH A GRUESOME PHOTO OF A WOMAN WHO DIED YEARS EARLIER FROM A BOTCHED ILLEGAL ABORTION. THE HEADLINE WAS ”NEVER AGAIN.” ROBERTA IT WAS ENTITLED "NEVER : AGAIN," BECAUSE IRONICALLY, WE THOUGHT NEVER AGAIN WOULD WOMEN
HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT GERRI SANTORO DID, WHO IS PIURED IN THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT ACCOMPANIED THE ARTICLE, DEAD ON A MOTEL ROOM FLOOR. WE THOUGHT NEVER AGAIN. WHOEVER THOUGHT THAT THE WHOLE THING COULD BE TURNED AROUND? REPORTER: THE FUTURE OF ABORTION ACCESS IN AMERICA NOW RESTS WITH THE SUPREME COURT, AND A DECISION THAT'S EXPECTED IN THE COMING DAYS. FOR THE PBS NEWSHOUR, I'M AMNA NAWAZ. JUDY: IT'S BEEN A VERY ROH YEAR SO FAR FOR STOCKS AND OTHER INVESTMENTS AS MARKETS HAVE DROPPED SHARPLY OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS. THAT PLUNGE HAS BEEN EVEN LARGER -- AND GOING ON LONGER -- FOR CRYPTO-CURRENCIES AND THAT SECTOR. WILLIAM BRANGHAM BREAKS DOWN WHAT'S BEHIND THE PLUNGE. WILLIAM: JUDY, AFTER HITTING RECENT LOWS OVER THE WEEKEND, SOME KEY CRYPTO-CURRENCIES LIKE
BITCOIN DID REBOUND A BIT TODAY, BUT THAT'S ONLY AFTER MONTHS OF STEADY, DRAMATIC LOSSES. IN FACT, THE TOTAL MARKET VALUE OF ALL CRYPTO-CURRENCIES COMBINED IS DOWN NEARLY TWO-THIRDS -- THAT'S ABOUT TWO TRILLION DOLLARS -- SINCE NOVEMBER. SOME OF THE BIGGEST ONES, LIKE BITCOIN, ARE DOWN 50% OR MORE FROM THEIR HIGHS AND SEVERAL TRADING PLATFORMS DEDICATED TO CRYPTO HAVE SUSPENDED ACTIVITY IN RECENT WEEKS. IT'S ALL A FAR CRY FROM THE GOLD RUSH-LIKE ATMOSPHERE FROM NOT THAT LONG AGO. DION RAH-BOWIN FOLLOWS THIS FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL AND JOINS ME NOW. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE. BEFOREE GET INTO WHY CRYPTO WAS HAVING A MELTDOWN, CAN YOU JUST REMIND US WHAT CRYPTOCURRENCY IS AND WHY IT WAS CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE? >> WHY QUESTION IS WHAT PEOPLE WILL DEBATE FOR A WHILE BUT CRYPTOCURRENCY IS ESSENTIALLY A
STANDARDIZED LEDGER WHERE PEOPLE CREATE TOKENS THAT CANNOT BE REPLICATED OR CREATED WHENEVER SOMEONE HAS THE URGE. YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH A PROCESS . AND THERE IS A SCARCITY. ONLY A CERTAIN NUMBER CAN BE CREATED. THAT IS THE DRAW. IT IS NOT AN UNLIMITED RESOURCE. ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT CAN BE CREATED. THE IDEA IS THAT SCARCITY CREATES VALUE. WILLIAM: SO IT IS A DIGITAL CURRENCY THAT PEOPLE CAN USE. >> EXACTLY. DIGITAL CURRENCY THAT IS NOT CREATED BY GOVERNMENT OR CENTRAL BANKS. WILLIAM: OK SO PEOPLE MIGHT REMEMBER THE AVALANCHE OF CRYPTO ADS THAT RAN DURING THE SUPER BOWL AND THERE WAS A GOLD RUSH WHERE EVERYONE WAS TRYING TO GET INTO IT BUT VALUATIONS HAVE HAD A FALL. WHY HAS THAT HAPPENED? >> THAT'S ANOTHER VERY GOOD QUESTION AND NO ONE IS IN TURN -- NO ONE IS ENTIRELY CERTAIN
WHY THE MARKET HAS DONE WHAT IT SAYS. BUT BASED ON CONVERSATIONS WE HAVE HAD WITH INVESTORS, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS. NUMBER ONE, CRYPTO HAS MOVED A LOT IN LINE WITH THE STOCK MARKET, PARTICULARLY TECH STOCK. SOME HIGHFLYING RISKY BETS THAT WERE DOING VERY WELL TOWARD THE END OF 2020 PEEKED OUT TOWARDS THE END OF NOVEMBER. A LOT OF THE SAME INVESTORS, I DID A VIDEO RECENTLY FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL YOUTUBE CHANNEL THAT HOW WALL STREET MOVED INTO CRYPTO AND INVESTORS HAVE TRADED ABOUT 10 TIMES AS MUCH CRYPTO IN 2021 AS IN 2020. SO A MAGNITUDE 10 SHIFT OF WALL STREET MOVED AGAIN. THAT IS GOOD IN TERMS OF INCREASING VALIDITY AND HAVING CRYPTO BE MAINSTREAM BUT ALSO WHEN THEY SENSE RISK, THEY ARE
QUICKER TO SELL THAN SOME OF THE TROOP BITCOIN BELIEVERS WHO BELIEVE IN HOLDING CRYPTO AND NOT SELLING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF WORRY ABOUT RISK AND BITCOIN IS STILL SEEN AS A RISKY ASSET. THERE IS NOT AN UNDERLYING USE FOR BITCOIN. SOME COMMODITIES LIKE GOLD AND COPPER, YOU DO NOT TREAT CRYPTOCURRENCY LIKE CURRENCY. IT IS NOT GENERALLY USED TO BUY AND SELL. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GETTING MARGIN CALLS, MEANING THEY ARE BORROWING MONEY AND LOSING MONEY TO INVEST AND THEN WHEN THINGS SETTLE OFF AND THEY LOSE VALUE, THEY HAVE TO SELL MORE THINGS TO MAKE UP FOR THE MONEY THEY OWE TO NOT HAVE TO PAY IN FULL. SO THERE ARE A LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS WEIGHING ON THE MARKET, BUT NONE OF THEM ARE HELPING THE
CRYPTOCURRENCY RIGHT NOW. WILLIAM: I REMEMBER EARLY EVANGELISTS SAYING CRYPTOCURRENCY WOULD SOMEHOW BE IMMUNE FROM OTHER MARKET FORCES. IN THIS ENORMOUS LOSS, TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, WHO IS GETTING HURT IN THE CASES? BIG INVESTORS, LITTLE INVESTORS, WHO WAS IT? >> LARGELY IT IS A LOT OF LITTLE INVESTORS WHO BOUGHT DURING THE PEAK AND NOW ARE HAVING TO SELL AT THE TROUGH. A LOT OF PEOPLE GOT INTO CRYPTO LATE. A LOT OF THEM WERE MOM-AND-POP RETAIL INVESTORS WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GREAT WAY TO GET-RICH-QUICK. THEY BOUGHT IT AT 60000 AND THOUGHT IT WOULD KEEP GOING UP BUT NOW IT IS ONLY GOING DOWN. BIG INVESTORS ARE BEING HURT. A LOT OF PEOPLE BOUGHT IN BIG ON THE BITCOIN TRAIN AND NOW ARE SEEING A LOT OF POSITIONS ERODED
AND RU AFOUL OF THE REST OF THEIR PORTFOLIO. SO IT IS ACROSS THE BOARD BUT I THINK THE PEOPLE REALLY SUFFERING ARE THE ONES WHO BOUGHT IT HIGH AND NOW HAVE TO SELL LOW. WILLIAM DION RABOUIN, THE WALL : STREET JOURNAL. THANK YOU SO MUCH. JUDY: AND THAT IS THE NEWSHOUR TONIGHT. JOIN US ONLINE AND AGAIN HERE TOMORROW EVENING.
